Job Description Washington Waldorf School (WWS) seeks a Teaching Assistant for Grades 1 and 2 for the 2026-2027 school year to support the lead teachers in creating a warm, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. The Teaching Assistant helps ensure that students experience a school environment aligned with Rudolf Steiner's philosophy and the AWSNA Principles of Waldorf Education, while contributing to WWS's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by supporting an inclusive and welcoming classroom community. This is an hourly non-exempt position paid at $25 per hour, up to a maximum of 29 hours per week, during the school year. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday and includes a paid lunch break. In addition to classroom responsibilities, the Teaching Assistant may be asked to attend regular planning meetings with the class teacher, seasonal faculty or department meetings, parent-teacher conferences, in-service and out-service training, and occasional professional development days. All Washington Waldorf School employees are responsible for fostering an educational environment aligned with Rudolf Steiner's philosophy and the AWSNA Principles of Waldorf Education; collaborating with colleagues to support students; contributing to a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community; and advancing the School's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Key Responsibilities Support the lead teachers in classroom management, daily rhythms, transitions, activities, and supervision of students Assist in creating and maintaining a warm, orderly, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment Support students in their learning, social development, and classroom participation Help prepare classroom materials, activities, and spaces as directed by the lead teachers Supervise students during classroom activities, recess, lunch, transitions, and other parts of the school day as needed Provide attentive, caring, and consistent support to individual students and the class as a whole Collaborate regularly with the lead teachers to support classroom planning, student needs, and daily operations Help model respectful, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate interactions with students Participate in meetings, trainings, professional development, and school events as required or requested Follow school policies and procedures related to student safety, supervision, communication, and confidentiality Minimum Qualifications Experience working with young children Familiarity with Waldorf education or a strong interest in learning more Warm, patient, reliable, and collaborative approach to working with children and adults Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to support classroom routines, transitions, and student needs with flexibility and care Commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree Waldorf training or experience in a Waldorf school setting Experience working in a lower school or early childhood classroom Interest in growing as a Waldorf educator The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, energetic, patient, and committed to supporting young children in a Waldorf classroom environment.
