Macon R-1 School District is looking to fill two Special Education Bus Paraprofessionals for the 2026-2027 school year.
Position Summary:
The Bus Paraprofessional provides safe, reliable, and supportive assistance to a student with high needs while riding the school bus to and from school. This individual ensures the student's physical, emotional, and behavioral needs are met during transportation and communicates effectively with parents, school staff, and transportation personnel as needed.
This is a part-time 5 hours per day/5 day week position riding the bus with students with disabilities.
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
Supervise and support the assigned student during bus rides to and from school
Assist the student with boarding, seating, and exiting the bus safely
Provide physical assistance as needed (e.g., securing seatbelts, mobility devices, or adaptive equipment)
Implement and follow the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or transportation plan, including behavior support strategies
Monitor the student's behavior and safety, intervening appropriately when necessary
Communicate concerns or incidents to the bus driver, school staff, and supervisors promptly
Maintain confidentiality regarding student information at all times
Attend required training sessions related to student needs, safety, and district policies
Perform other duties as assigned to support the student's safe transportation
Minimum Qualifications:
Employment will be contingent upon a satisfactory background check and fingerprint check by the Missouri State Highway Patrol
High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience working with children, preferably students with disabilities or high needs
Ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive in a variety of situations
Basic understanding of safety procedures and willingness to receive training (e.g., first aid, CPR, behavior management)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Physical ability to assist with lifting, mobility, and securing students if needed
