Full Job Description Job Summary:

The Teacher Assistant supports the Outdoor Education program at West Side Montessori by assisting the Outdoor Education Teacher with planning, supervising, and delivering engaging, nature-based learning experiences for students. This role emphasizes safety, hands-on instruction, and fostering curiosity about the natural world. A Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required; prior child/youth experience is highly valued. The position is part-time and on an hourly schedule, with responsibilities including activity setup, student supervision, and collaboration with the Outdoor Education Teacher to create enriching outdoor learning opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist the Outdoor Education teacher in planning and delivering age-appropriate outdoor lessons and activities. Supervise students during outdoor activities, transitions, to ensure safety and positive behavior. Help set up, maintain, and break down materials and equipment for lessons and activities. Support differentiated instruction to meet diverse learner needs. Encourage student curiosity, observation, and inquiry through hands-on exploration. Enforce clear safety guidelines and emergency procedures during all activities. Monitor student well-being and address minor injuries or problems, informing the teacher as needed. Help maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free outdoor learning space. Assist with attendance, behavior logs, and incident reporting for outdoor classes. Aid in the preparation of lesson materials, handouts, and assessments. Help with setup and cleanup of outdoor learning spaces before and after sessions. Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities as required. Model Montessori values, respect, and responsibility in all interactions.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree preferred but not required. Interest or experience in outdoor education, nature-based learning, or environmental education is desirable. Prior experience working with children in educational, camp, after-school, or youth program settings is preferred. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to supervise and manage groups of children in outdoor settings. Basic first aid and safety awareness; willingness to learn and follow established safety protocols. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Flexibility, creativity, and a positive, can-do attitude.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to engage in physical activity typical of working with young children, including bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
