This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for "[POOL]" positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. If/when a position becomes available, the College will review applications from this pool, and interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening. Applicants must reapply to the pool annually to maintain their active status in the pool. Contributes to student academic success and completion by assisting students in their study of mathematics and applied mathematics courses. Assists students to become successful and independent learners by using Socratic questioning to improve their critical thinking, problem solving, study strategies and ability to make connections between mathematical concepts and applications.Essential Duties:
Assists students with all math classes from basic math through calculus by answering specific questions about math problems, assigned activities, and math aids such as graphing calculators. Supports students in applied math classes by explaining and modeling effective study strategies. Provides answers in multiple ways to meet learner needs. Shows enthusiasm for using mathematics. Welcomes students to Math instructional support services. Assists students' integration into college by explaining how to use the Math Help Desk, Math Angle or Math Café. Maintains a positive, student-centered learning environment by learning students' names and introducing students who may be interested in studying together. Encourages a growth mindset towards learning mathematics. Explains and models effective math study habits such as note taking, use of course materials, time management and test preparation. Provides students in math courses with additional resources and explanations to foster learner confidence and persistence and reduce math anxiety. Promotes student use of the check-in system (Tutortrac). Keeps an accurate tally of students' use of the Math Help Desk by class and time of day. Informs students about math courses and Learning Center procedures. Refers students to Learning Center and other campus resources, as needed. Attends scheduled staff meetings and training to meet CRLA certified tutor standards. Performs other related duties as assigned.Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities:
Learned physical skill is required for keyboarding and operation of other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and sufficient hearing and well-developed speaking ability to communicate with staff and students. May move from table to table to assist students in the Math Café. Must be able to demonstrate solutions using paper and pencil and whiteboard. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a highly active, open lab setting and instructional service area with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Area environment includes multiple background conversations and frequent interruptions. Some shifts require working evenings or weekends. Education and Experience Applications are reviewed for minimum qualifications. In order to be considered, your application must clearly show you meet the qualifications for this position. Must have successfully completed differential and integral calculus (MTH 251 and MTH 252) with a C or better. Requires AA/AS degree plus the equivalent of one year, full-time related experience; or three years full-time related experience; OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. An AA/AS in mathematics or related is preferred. Satisfactory completion of coursework in statistics and physical sciences (chemistry and physics) is also preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requires a current knowledge of mathematics and the ability to shift rapidly between questions from widely different areas. Must have successfully completed differential and integral calculus with a C grade or higher. Requires a knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Must have a working knowledge of instructional practices and techniques sufficient to tutor students on an informal level. Requires a basic knowledge of LBCC mathematics curriculum. Must have strong communication skills, and the ability to communicate. Must be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of students in terms of their mathematical abilities, learning styles, backgrounds and personalities. Requires the ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position and work with multiple students, continually, throughout the assigned shift. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of students and respond with sensitivity to each individual. Must be able to work collaboratively with a diversity of instructional colleagues, staff, and students. Requires the ability to help students at a rate of approximately 10 per hour. Must be able to work with technology and software used in mathematics and applied mathematics courses including Desmos, MyMathLab and ALEKS. Must understand the needs and differences of students and appropriately respond to those needs. Must be able to use a graphing calculator. Familiarity with LBCC course materials, methods and procedures. Experience teaching developmental math at a community college is preferred. Experience tutoring students in mathematics is desirable. Compensation Information:
All Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position's grade. Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable. Step increases are subject to eligibility, and only take place at the end of the Fiscal Year in July if approved and submitted by the employee's supervisor of record. Hours worked in more than one position or department cannot be combined for step advancement. Part-time Classified employees are paid once monthly, on the last day of the month. Athletic Trainers, Farm Aides, Sign Language Interpreters, Transcribers, and Translators can find individual hourly rate information at the bottom of the Salary Schedule.
