Aug 1, 2026 Job Description SUFFOLK POSITION TITLE 2890 SPECIALEDUCATION SUPPORT SPECIALIST 11 MONTH PROF I GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills associated with Provides support and guidance to special education staff in the areas of special education compliance and specially designed instruction Support teachers with using assessment data to plan instruction Monitors development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and provides feedback to special education teacher and administrator Supports and participates in special education meetings Effectively organizes and presents information both orally and in writing Prepares information for local, state, and federal special education reports Participates in Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) meetings as a special education consultant Provides case management for students with disabilities receiving services in alternative placements Assists in the provision and monitoring of homebound/homebased instruction for students with disabilities Assist teachers in the development and implementation of effective classroom management strategies, positive behavioral supports, individual behavioral intervention plans, instructional planning, and classroom organization related to special education services Assist teachers in the development of instructional materials, adaptations, accommodations, modifications and assessments needed for students with special needs who are educated in the general education and/or special education setting Trains, models, and coaches teachers in planning and implementing research based effective instructional practices for students with disabilities in elementary, middle, and high school Plan and deliver ongoing professional development for special education teachers and support staff to meet division and building level training needs Assists the Special Education department in designing and supporting the implementation of school based programs to meet the needs of all students with disabilities Maintain district and building level Special Education support logs Remain current regarding national and state standards, and special education trends and issues Perform related work, as required Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned.Note:

Exhibits a working knowledge of and assists in monitoring state and federal regulations and guidelines in special education Demonstrates knowledge of various methods of data collection and subsequent analysis and interpretation of data to drive appropriate instructional decisions and interventions Possesses considerable knowledge of effective and varied teaching and co-teaching strategies and assessment techniques Possesses considerable knowledge and understanding of the principles of team buildingEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possess an appropriate Virginia teaching certificate - Special Education endorsement required Master's Degree in Special Education preferred Minimum of five years successful special education teaching experience Personal characteristics conducive to working effectively with students, teachers, school and division personnel, community groups, and parentsEQUIPMENT
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
(Travel) Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.FLSA STATUS
