Position Summary
Rutland City Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic, student-centered Outdoor Adventure & Community Engagement Paraeducator to support students through experiential learning opportunities both in and outside of the classroom. This position works closely with students and staff to promote engagement, confidence, social-emotional growth, and career exploration through outdoor recreation, community partnerships, and hands-on learning experiences. The ideal candidate is energetic, flexible, community-minded, and passionate about helping students build life skills through authentic experiences. This role includes supporting students in outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, walking trails, snowshoeing, and other seasonal recreation opportunities, while also helping coordinate and facilitate career exploration, job shadowing, and community-based learning experiences throughout the Rutland region.
Responsibilities:
Support students during outdoor adventure and experiential learning activities both on and off campus
Assist in supervising and engaging students during hiking, biking, winter recreation, and other physical activities
Help foster positive student relationships, teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving skills
Support students in developing social, behavioral, and independent living skills
Assist staff with community engagement opportunities, including career exploration, field experiences, volunteer opportunities, and job shadowing placements
Serve as a positive liaison between students, school staff, and community partners
Provide instructional and behavioral support to students in individual, small group, and classroom settings
Assist with de-escalation, crisis intervention, and behavior support strategies as needed
Help ensure student safety during transportation, community outings, and outdoor activities
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and positive communication with students, families, staff, and community members
Perform other duties as assigned in support of student success and program goals
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or related experience preferred
Valid driver's license preferred
CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain
Experience working with youth or students preferred
Interest or experience in outdoor recreation, adventure education, mentoring, coaching, or community-based programming preferred
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Flexible, dependable, and able to adapt to changing student and program needs
Ability to build positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and activity levels
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to actively participate in outdoor recreation activities including walking, bending, reaching, hiking, biking, lifting equipment up to approximately 25 pounds, and navigating uneven terrain. The position also requires the ability to supervise students in active and community-based settings. This position requires the ability to move throughout school buildings and district facilities. Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
