SUMMARY:
The Transition Program Life Skills Para supports young adults with disabilities enrolled in the district's formal Transition Program as they prepare for life after high school. The position supports students while they develop employability, independent living, and social skills. The Transition Life Skills Para works closely with program staff, families, employers, and community partners to promote independence and successful outcomes for each young adult.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide individualized and small-group instruction to young adults in daily living skills, including personal care, self-management, and household routines. Support young adults in developing vocational skills, including job readiness, workplace behavior, task completion, and use of vocational tools or technology. Support young adults at community job sites, vocational placements, and volunteer experiences to reinforce appropriate workplace behavior and expectations. Transport young adults using district vehicles and other forms of public transit to community job sites, including van pick-up and drop-off from the transportation facility. Facilitate community-based learning experiences, including job site visits, volunteer opportunities, and independent travel training. Assist young adults in setting and achieving personal, educational, and vocational goals. Model and reinforce appropriate social, communication, and problem-solving skills in classroom and community settings. Collaborate with teachers, program staff, families, and community partners to coordinate learning and work experiences and ensure consistent support. Model and reinforce communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills in real-world environments. Assist young adults in developing self-advocacy and independence in both workplace and community settings. Support young adults with job applications, interview preparation, and worksite orientation as appropriate. Coordinate and monitor student schedules, transportation needs, and site assignments. Monitor and document young adults progress toward individualized goals, reporting to the program administrator and IEP team. Participate in team meetings, trainings, and transition planning to support program goals. Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations. QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or higher preferred. Transcripts required, OR a copy of your diploma or GED uploaded to your application. Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly Driver's License and Mead School District Type II Driver certificate or ability to get one within 30 days of employment. Even if currently employed at Mead354 as a substitute para, you must upload your high school transcripts or a copy of your diploma in order to be considered for a continuing, full-time para role. Para educators shall be required to be highly qualified upon hire into a continuing, full-time position as defined by state law. Completed at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university; OR Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR Completed and passed the ETS ParaPro Praxis Assessment (qualifying score of at least 455); OR Completed and passed the Master Teacher Assessments (2 assessments, qualifying score of at least 65%); OR Completed and passed the Pearson Paraprofessional assessment: (qualifying score of at least) OR Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to work independently with minimal administrative supervision while maintaining a strong commitment to young adults with disabilities and their successful transition to adult life. Experience working with young adults with disabilities in educational, vocational, or community-based settings. Demonstrated ability to support and coach young adults toward greater independence. Understanding of individualized education programs (IEPs) and transition planning Ability to model and teach workplace and community participation skills. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Flexibility to adapt to varied work environments and young adult needs. Commitment to promoting inclusive practices and equitable opportunities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience as a job coach, paraeducator, or in a vocational rehabilitation setting. Knowledge of transition services for students ages 18-22 and the principles of supported employment. Familiarity with community resources and local employment networks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work may be performed in a variety of settings, including school buildings and community locations both inside and outside. The position may require flexible scheduling to meet family and program needs, including occasional evening hours. The role involves frequent contact with young adults, families, district staff, and community partners, requiring a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. The work includes periods of sitting, standing, and walking, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds unaided and may lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of another person and/or a lift assist. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or ordinary infectious diseases carried by young adults.
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT and Salary:
As outlined by and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) of the Mead Support and Service Professionals and Policies and Procedures of Mead School District. A typical school year consists of 180 days plus 10 holidays, September through June of each school year. The individual number of days may vary by position as defined within the CBA. The salary range for the position is: Min $19.13•Max $ 22.16 not including longevity. Positions qualifying for the intensive care stipend as defined within the contract earn an additional $2.00 per hour. Salary placement will be at step 1 on the scale for the position unless otherwise noted within the contract. An employee employed less than a full work year shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employee's scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours, or to be accumulated for the purpose of cash out. Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
