TITLE:
Early Childhood Aide
REPORTS TO
School Principal or Other Assigned Immediate Supervisor
JOB GOAL
To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials; To contribute to the efficient operation of a school office so that it can play its effective part in the education process; and, To assist in providing safe transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantages from Ohio County Schools curricular and extra-curricular programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess ECCAT Temporary Authorization as required by law.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass the approved West Virginia Service Personnel Tests for School Aide.
  • Completion of a successful background check.
  • Basic word processing skills preferred.
  • Be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Be able to prepare reports and perform required bookkeeping procedures.
  • Possess computer skills to include competency in work processing, date management and spread sheets.
  • Experience and training with toileting, catheterization, aspiration techniques and other special needs as needed.
  • Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as an Aide in any one or all of the following areas: Teacher Aide, Clerical Aide, Special Education Aide, and/or Bus Aide.
  • This job is classified as requiring a medium-heavy work capacity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and district laws and policies.
  • Promote and adhere to the district mission, core beliefs, academic goals, and target areas.
  • Prepare student attendance reports.
  • Provide and collect workbooks, papers and other materials for instruction.
  • Collect and record collection of money.
  • Read to students and participate in other forms of oral communications with students.
  • Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Help student's master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Operate and care for classroom and office equipment including computers.
  • Assist with lunch, snack and clean up routines.
  • Assist with toileting and wash-up routines of both males and female students, which may include catheterization, associated lifting, aspiration techniques, and other special needs as required.
  • Assist with dressing and undressing of both male and female students.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Type a variety of materials such as letters, student records, reports and memos.
  • Demonstrate the ability to remain and respond calmly and objectively to a variety of situations.
  • Provide a variety of behavior management techniques in a crisis situation before resorting to passive restraint.
  • Exhibit the physical attributes to passively restrain both male and female students over an extended period of time.
  • Display the ability to physically control adolescent male and female students.
  • Assist with maintaining a structured learning environment through appropriate organization of time, space arrangements, material organization.
  • Implement established rules, instructions, preventive discipline, and other environmental stimuli to bring about significant changes in student functioning.
  • Implement social, tangible, token activity, and other contingency environmental stimuli to manage behavior and bring about behavior changes.
  • Follow lesson plans developed for instructional, social academic and emotional skills and objectives.
  • Assist with modifying curriculum materials.
  • Assist the teacher, other staff members or administration in working with students.
  • Provide input into planning and scheduling.
  • Participate in staff development training for the purpose of enhancing skills.
  • Assist in keeping accurate and efficient records.
  • Be cognizant of special education characteristics.
  • Provide a positive role model for students.
  • Apply humor, joy and enthusiasm under appropriate circumstances.
  • Self-evaluate personal and job related characteristics on a regular basis and take corrective action if needed.
  • File correspondence, invoices, cards or other records in prescribed manner, depending upon the practice of the school to which assigned.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports as directed including bookkeeping procedures.
  • Assist the secretary in various office duties as assigned.
  • Keep prompt hours.
  • Be courteous to callers at all times.
  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining good student conduct on the bus.
  • Assist young or disabled students in getting on and off the bus.
  • Assure that students get on and off the bus in an orderly fashion.
  • Provide written report of violations relative to discipline to the Principal of the School.
  • Collect and turn over to the appropriate school secretary those personal items left on the bus by students.
  • Report to assigned school, after completing bus run.
  • Supervise the use of assistive devices (i.e. crutches, canes, walkers, braces, wheelchairs, seat belts).
  • Assist with emergency management.
  • Assist with evacuation procedures.
  • Implement special IEP services.
  • Communicate effectively and openly with teachers, administration, other staff members and students.
  • Communicate and establish positive relationships with parents.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Attend first aid classes as required to maintain certification.
  • Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
  • Maintain positive work habits.
  • Perform duties efficiently and productively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Immediate Supervisor, Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent.
