AVID Tutor

Essential Elements:
CHINO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AVID TUTOR DEFINITION
Under the supervision of a certificated teacher, serves as a tutor by performing the necessary duties in the implementation of essential Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) methodologies for students and to do related work as required. Additionally, under the direction of the District AVID coordinator and subsequently the site AVID coordinator, is well versed in AVID instructional methodologies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading (WICR). AVID tutors lead by asking questions, encouraging students to discover truths through their own thinking processes and to follow the directives of the AVID elective teacher and AVID site coordinator. NCLB compliance is not required.OCCUPATIONAL GROUP
ExemptEXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Leads study groups in AVID tutorial methodologies. (E) 2. Observes, reviews, and models student Cornell notes, binder organization, and calendars. (E) 3. Participates in Socratic seminar discussions. 4. Meets with the AVID teachers and coordinator for weekly planning and review. (E) 5. Helps students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults. (E) 6. Functions as an appropriate, positive role model. (E) 7. Attends appropriate staff meetings and in-service training. (E) 8. Works with students in any phase of the writing process. (E) 9. Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation. 10. Assists in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions. 11. Communicates frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator and/or AVID elective teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern. (E) 12. Performs other duties as assigned. - Child growth and development principles.
- English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
ABILITY TO
- Work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Carry out oral and written directions.
- Operate necessary equipment such as copy machines and computers.
- Reinforce the concepts that need to be taught or re-taught.
- Maintain professional attitude and relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintain the confidentiality of school-related incidents and information.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and have the ability to obtain and maintain insurability status under the District's vehicle insurance policy. Employment eligibility that may include fingers, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.EDUCATION
Demonstrate proof of current enrollment in a 4-year college or university, or demonstrate proof of current enrollment in a 2-year college preferably with a plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university or recent graduate of a 4-year university. Position requires the completion of a 16-hour training course at Riverside County Office of Education to demonstrate proficiency of AVID tutoring methodologies (provided if offered a position).WORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT
- Subject to frequent interruptions and extensive contact with staff and students.
- Indoor and outdoor environment.
- Exposure to various emergency situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Eyesight, corrected or uncorrected, sufficient to read fine .
- Hearing, with or without use of hearing aid sufficient to hear oral instruction.
- Understandable voice and speech patterns.
- Physical stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Stamina and coordination to walk on uneven terrain play yards and school grounds.
- Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist and turn.
- Strength to lift 10 pounds.
HAZARDS:
- Extended viewing of computer monitor.
- Working with chalk and chalkboard or dry erase boards and markers.
- Working around and with office and classroom equipment having moving parts.
- May be exposed to contact with hostile individuals.
