Position Summary:
The College Corner staff at New Economics for Women (NEW) play an essential role in supporting middle school and high school youth in their academic and personal development. The College Corner Tutor is an ambassador of NEW's mission, actively contributing to the organization's objectives and ensuring alignment with the overall purpose of supporting economic mobility for underrepresented communities. As an ambassador for the organization, this person is also responsible for actively supporting the overall mission and vision of NEW.Candidate Profile:
By providing tutoring, enrichment activities, and guidance on higher education, the College Corner staff plays a pivotal role in improving the academic performance and future prospects of the youth served by NEW.Duties and Responsibilities:
Youth Tutoring and Academic Support:
Provide tutoring to middle school and high school students, helping them with academic tasks and assignments as outlined by their school year curriculum. Assist students in improving their academic performance, offering targeted help in specific subjects or areas of difficulty.Enrichment Activities:
Organize and lead enrichment activities designed to spark interest in higher education and help students develop essential skills for self-advocacy. These activities may include workshops, seminars, and projects that encourage students to explore their potential and understand the value of continuing their education beyond high school.Promoting Higher Education:
Encourage youth to consider higher education and offer insights into different educational pathways (college, vocational training, scholarships, etc.). Help students explore career options, set academic goals, and prepare for future academic opportunities.Engagement and Support:
Actively engage with students to keep them motivated, provide academic guidance, and create a positive learning environment. Develop personal connections to help foster students' social development and build confidence in their abilities.Outreach and Community Engagement:
Participate in outreach efforts to engage youth and bring them into the program, ensuring access to academic support and enrichment activities. Engage with students, parents, and school staff to encourage ongoing participation and build awareness of available services.Client Intake/Assessments and Referrals:
Assist with intake assessments to understand the academic needs of each student and tailor tutoring and enrichment activities accordingly. Make referrals to additional resources or programs as needed, such as specialized tutoring or after-school programs.Customer Follow-Up:
Conduct follow-up with students and families to ensure continued academic progress and that the services provided are effective in meeting students' needs. Maintain communication with students and parents to ensure goals are being met and to address any concerns or new needs that may ariseQualifications and Experience:
Minimum English 1 Course completion required, ensuring a foundational level of academic competency to support tutoring and enrichment activities. Minimum Algebra 2 proficiency preferred, indicating the ability to support students in higher-level academic subjects and help them with math-related tasks. Strong verbal and written communication skills, essential for interacting with youth, parents, and other team members, and for documentation and reporting purposes. Proficiency in word processing tools and spreadsheets (MS Office Word, Excel, Access, etc.), ensuring the ability to manage documentation, track progress, and create reports efficiently.Additional Requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled in college, or a recent graduate (From graduation date)
- Must have a valid California Driver's License, Liability Insurance, and an automobile in good working condition
- Fingerprinting and TB Clearance
- CPR/First Aid Certification is a plus
- Flexible with working hours, including evenings and weekends
- Fluent in Spanish is a plus
