ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
Founded in 2001, the community organization Proyecto Mixteco/Indígena (MICOP) helps, organizes, and empowers the indigenous migrant community residing on the Central Coast of California. This is achieved through improved access to community and health resources, community organizing, language interpretation, education, direct assistance, cultural advocacy, and our indigenous-led community radio station Radio Indígena. MICOP offers a fast-paced, multilingual, and multicultural work environment dedicated to carrying out our mission.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Community Plaza tutor will serve as an educational mentor to adult students who are learning to read and write in Spanish. The tutor will use the literacy materials from the MICOP Community Plaza program, such as the INEA (National Institute for Adult Education) modules. They will also offer basic education to all youth and adults over 15 years old who have not completed their education, through the formal school system. The person selected for this position will provide quality education that enriches the lives and work of those seeking to complete their primary and secondary education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Individually assist adults in their literacy learning. Help participants complete their primary and/or secondary education. Be responsible for attending classes punctually on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm. Organize and plan teaching materials for students. Plan class sessions and adapt them to the didactic needs of each student. Coordinate reminder calls to adult students. Maintain the daily and monthly attendance list of students and volunteers. Work with the Community Plaza MICOP program supervisor. Deliver weekly/monthly reports on the student's learning activities, progress, evaluations, and any matters of interest to the tutor. Maintain confidentiality unless consent to share information has been given. Register the student in the SASA system (Automated Tracking and Accreditation System). Maintain a paper and virtual file for each student, including but not limited to: profile photo, copy of identification (credential and/or enrollment), unique population registry code (CURP), grades (level or course trajectory), record, and any other registration document. Keep confidential the codes or access keys granted to you for access to the virtual programs of Plaza Comunitaria, such as the SASA system. Keep the list of beneficiaries with signatures and enrolled program up to date. Use computer and internet for documenting all activities offered by the program and implement assessments to provide grades to the student. Attend the training sessions for Community Plaza Tutors offered by the Consulate of Mexico in Oxnard and the Academic Directorate of the Institute. to support the learning of young and adult individuals. Attend training sessions and all MICOP team meetings. Prepare materials for outreach and events at MICOP's monthly meetings or community fairs and events with the goal of informing and recruiting people, including promoting and sharing the activities of other MICOP programs. Promote and advertise adult education services through Indigenous Radio with interviews and PSAs. Report hours and miles properly and on time. Have regular meetings with your supervisor at MICOP. Other duties may be assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree required, bachelors degree preferred Ability to speak, write, and read in Spanish is required, an indigenous language is preferred (speaking English is an advantage). Computer skills (MS Office Suite, Word, and Excel). Be motivating, with a positive attitude. Have your own transportation. Ability to communicate effectively in public. Flexible schedule from 6:00 pm to 8 pm on Monday and Tuesday. Being organized, responsible, able to manage your time effectively. Commitment and dedication to the project.
