Full Job Description Lab Assistant, Science Tutor, and Outdoor Programs Coordinator Job Description Classification:
Exempt, Part-time,10-Month Faculty Reports to: Science Department Chair Position Overview This multi-faceted role supports the Urban School's commitment to hands-on science and experiential learning. The ideal candidate bridges the gap between the laboratory and the field, providing technical support for the Science Department, academic mentorship for students, and logistical leadership for outdoor expeditions. Core Responsibilities Science Laboratory & Academic Support (~50% FTE)
Lab Operations:
Manage setup/cleanup for experiments, prepare chemical solutions and LB plates, maintain equipment, and oversee supply ordering and chemical hygiene.
Instructional Tutoring:
Lead 1:1 and small-group tutoring sessions (focused on 9th/10th-grade Biology and Chemistry).
Student Mentorship:
Help students develop lab report writing skills, test-taking strategies, and metacognitive awareness of their learning gaps. Outdoor Programs & Cal Studies (30% FTE)
Trip Coordination:
Establish the annual trip calendar, manage budgets, coordinate transportation, and maintain/inventory outdoor gear.
Field Leadership:
Lead or co-lead varied excursions, including climbing, backpacking (fall/spring), rafting, and snow trips. Spring Term (Cal Studies): Support the 12-week California Studies course (March-June). This includes weekly field trips and a cumulative 11-day expedition across California.
Safety & Medical:
Serve as the Medical Leader on trips; maintain first aid kits, review medical forms, and ensure rigorous risk management protocols.
Essential Qualifications Academic:
Strong background in Biology and Chemistry; previous laboratory experience (Genetics or Molecular Biology preferred).
Outdoor:
Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications; clean driving record (experience with trailers is a plus).
Interpersonal:
Proven success working with high-school students; ability to act as an "active adult presence" who can troubleshoot problems independently.
Organizational:
Exceptional ability to manage simultaneous projects with competing deadlines and logistical moving parts.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Environments:
Fluctuates between a professional laboratory, traditional classroom, and rugged outdoor settings.
Stamina:
Ability to stand, bend, and lift 25 lbs; ability to work in hot or inclement weather and drive long distances.
Commitment:
This is a 10-month position requiring a full academic year commitment, including some overnight and multi-day travel. Salary and Benefits The anticipated salary range the School reasonably expects to pay candidates for the position of Lab Assistant, Science Tutor, and Outdoor Programs Coordinator in San Francisco is $61,000 to $65,000 annually. This position includes the opportunity to participate extensively in Urban's teaching community, to collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and pedagogy, and to benefit from Urban's professional development program.
