Job Description

Upper School Academic Resource Center ARC Tutor Pace Academy is an independent college preparatory school in Atlanta, Ga., with an enrollment of 1,150 students in Pre-First through 12th grade. The school provides a learning environment that cultivates global citizenship, a spirit of service, respect for differences and strong character in its students. Pace actively seeks candidates from historically underrepresented populations. The Upper School Academic Resource Center (ARC) Tutor provides support to students grades 9-12 in the area of Humanities including but not limited to English, History and Composition. This is a part-time, hourly non-exempt position. The ARC tutor works both one-on-one and with small groups of students with a wide range of abilities -- both during the school day and after school -- to reinforce basic skills, review classroom material, and guide toward study practices that lead students to excellence. A compassionate approach and an ability to motivate are keys to the position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Focus on specific content: English literature, composition and World / U.S. History Assist students to understand how to approach reading novels and textbooks and writing at the high school level. Aid students in building study skills in topic areas. Guide with study plans for weekly review as well as for assessments Review / reinforce class material weekly by using class materials to quiz students; assist in review before assessments Devise / research and employ innovative methods tailored to specific students Helpful but not mandatory to have at least a cursory background in: English literature, particularly foundation pieces students will encounter in the high school curriculum (such as, but not limited to The Odyssey, The Catcher in the Rye, Julius Caesar, Romeo & Juliet, The Great Gatsby, 1984, major poets and short story writers) Skill in teaching of composition is key - including the basic five-paragraph essay, editing skills, and research methods. History from ancient civilizations through American contemporary The format of and study skills for taking Advanced Placement exams
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor s degree or higher Strong background in English literature / composition and world history Tutoring experience at the high school level required Ability to establish rapport with and to motivate teenagers Excellent organizational and communication skills Familiarity with neurodiversity such as dyslexia as well as ADHD Word processing proficiency (Google, Apple system)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Classroom environment that may regularly require the employee to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop or kneel Ability to sit at a computer desk for an extended period Ability to operate a computer, smart board and/or projector Ability to lift, carry, push or pull 30-50 lbs with assistance
