Part-Time American Sign Language (ASL) Tutors•Massachusetts Family Sign Language Program:

The Gallaudet University Regional Center•East is seeking part-time American Sign Language (ASL) tutors across Massachusetts to provide instruction and family-centered language support for families with deaf and hard of hearing children ages birth to three years. Tutors work with parents, caregivers, and extended family members to support early visual language development, model natural ASL use, and share knowledge of Deaf culture and community resources. Tutors are hired on an as needed basis. Sessions are delivered either remotely via Zoom or in-person in the family's home. In-person instruction requires travel to family residences across assigned regions. •American Sign Language Tutor positions are an "Open Pool" for the Fall 25/Spring 26 Academic Year. There may or may not be available openings at this time however, when an opening does occur, the hiring manager will draw from the pool of applicants we have on file.•RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Provide ASL instruction and language modeling to parents, caregivers, and extended family members in remote and in-home settings. Serve as a Deaf role model by sharing Deaf cultural knowledge, lived experience, and community resources. Follow the Massachusetts Family Sign Language Program curriculum and lesson structure. Use everyday routines, familiar objects, and natural interactions to support early visual language development and joint attention. Model effective communication strategies (e.g., gaining visual attention, use of space, eye gaze, and depiction). Coach families in strategies to create visually accessible home environments and routines. Adapt instruction to family learning styles, goals, and cultural backgrounds. Prepare for each session and complete required documentation in a timely and professional manner. Participate in trainings, team meetings, and professional development as required.Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
NOTE:
Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire. Native or near native fluency in American Sign Language Experience teaching ASL and/or serving as a Deaf language model or role model Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture, Deaf history, and community resources Strong family-centered communication skills, including the ability to work respectfully with hearing families new to the Deaf community High standards of professional conduct, confidentiality, and ethical practice Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills. Flexible schedule to accommodate family availability (including evenings/weekends) Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for in-person visits, or access to public transportation Willingness to participate in training, supervision, and program evaluation Ability to successfully completeCORI/SORI
