Job Description

Role Overview Thrive Education Partners is seeking a warm, structured, and experienced tutor or learning specialist to provide in-person summer support for a middle school student in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This role will focus primarily on math remediation, pencil-and-paper problem solving, executive functioning support, and confidence-building.
Compensation:
TBD, depending on experience. The family lives on the west side of Winston-Salem, off Meadowlark Road in the Brookberry Farm neighborhood. The immediate need is summer tutoring, with the possibility of continuing into the school year for one to two evenings per week if the match is strong. This is a meaningful opportunity for an educator who enjoys helping bright, capable students rebuild skills and confidence through patient, personalized instruction. The right tutor will know how to balance encouragement with clear expectations, helping the student experience productive struggle without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Student Profile You'll be working one-on-one with a bright, creative, and curious 14 year old student who enjoys gaming, game design, space, and dinosaur facts. He is capable and engaging, and he will likely respond well to a tutor who can connect learning to his interests in thoughtful, age-appropriate ways. The student has ADHD and has struggled with executive functioning for several years. He has been in a one-on-one school setting for the past two years, which has provided some benefits, but the family is now looking for more explicit support around independence, written work, and follow-through. His parent is especially interested in a tutor who can help him practice showing his work, building stamina, and developing stronger academic habits. Math is the immediate priority. The student previously scored around the 75th percentile nationally in math, but this year dropped closer to the 25th percentile. The family suspects that digital and mental math have limited his pencil-and-paper fluency, and a recent informal assessment suggested he may need to revisit seventh-grade-level concepts before rebuilding eighth-grade-level written math skills. What You'll Do Identify math gaps and create a clear, responsive remediation plan. Support pencil-and-paper math skills, including showing work, multi-step problem solving, written computation, and conceptual understanding. Rebuild foundational math skills while helping the student regain confidence and a sense of capability. Weave executive functioning support into each session, including planning, task initiation, organization, working memory strategies, and follow-through. Help the student build independence by reducing reliance on adult prompting over time. Create sessions that are structured and consistent, while still making room for creativity, humor, and the student's interests. Support productive struggle without allowing the student to become overly discouraged or avoidant. Keep an eye on writing skills as needed, while maintaining math as the clear priority. What Makes Someone Successful You are warm, gentle, encouraging, and relational, but you can also hold clear boundaries. You have experience supporting students with ADHD and executive functioning challenges. You are strong in middle school math and comfortable rebuilding foundational skills with patience and precision. You know how to keep a student on task without turning the session into a power struggle. You can create structure without being rigid, and you can adjust your approach when a student is tired, resistant, or discouraged. You are creative enough to connect learning to interests like gaming, design, space, or dinosaurs when it genuinely supports engagement.
