Job Description

Position :
Academic Mentor Reports to:
Academic Services Manager Hours:
Monday through Friday, 3:00PM - 7:00PM Monday through Friday, up to 20 hours per week . Employees are expected to work throughout the week, as permitted by NAC scheduling. Some late night, early morning and weekend hours may be required throughout the year (Typically during College Application, Financial Aid, and SAT Programming season; annual events such as NAC Thanksgiving, NAC Alumni Reunions, and NAC Graduation) About 1 hour, or more, of social media and phone outreach every week when needed Hours may vary slightly during the summer (mid-June through early August)
Status:
Part-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt Pay Rate:
$21-$22.50 per hour (DOE)

Requirements:
Enrolled in College and in good academic standing (45+ college credits with a B or better, will be asked to submit transcript) A successful student in at least one subject but also academically well rounded CPR Certified (needs to be obtained prior to official hire) TB Clearance (needs to be obtained prior to official hire) Must pass DOJ fingerprinting clearance (provided by NAC) Visits to college locations during Fall and Spring semesters, including weekend trips; includes in-state travel Travel between NAC Offices will be required in accordance to business needs. Can tutor in high-level math, science and writing.
DESCRIPTION NAC
Academic Mentors' (AM) primary responsibility is to provide academic assistance and empower students by encouraging them to develop skills necessary to successfully graduate high school and navigate higher education. Academic Mentors provide support and coach students on a wide range of academic subjects, assisting students in improving academic achievement, and work on study, testing and knowledge skills. Other assistance may include reviewing class materials, reading and discussing school texts, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems related to students' core academic classes. Academic Mentors are not expected to know everything about specific subjects, but they are expected to access school texts, online tutor programs, and communicate with their supervisors whenever additional information is needed. This position also provides administrative and non-administrative support to the Academic Management Team as requested.

ESTABLISH
mentor/mentee relationship boundaries. Create supportive and collaborative learning environments where students feel safe to interact and learn from each other. Model study habits and teach students about time management, note-taking, reading and active listening as well as to develop skills necessary for academic success. Facilitate academic mentoring sessions with one or more students. Maintain communication with the whole Academics staff and NAC Management Team. Serves as a role model, inspiring and motivating students to excel academically and pursue postsecondary education. Learn the process of college placement and apply valuable skills and practices for mentoring and helping students accomplish their higher education goals. Provide mentorship and academic assistance to a minimum of 8 to 10 students every day. Provide academic support in all areas of academics when needed. Maintain and target students on case management load. Move around the academic center continuously to identify students' changing needs throughout the day. Assist with designing and implementing SMART lesson plans throughout the academic year, including fall, winter and spring breaks, and for NAC's Summer program (i.e. classes, workshops, field trips, Academic Learning Activities). Help students develop a high level of motivation in all academic areas. Participate and actively contribute to discussion during biweekly Academic Mentor meetings to discuss student progress.
ADMINISTRATIVE
Maintain a report of daily academic outreach activities. Maintain a report of mentoring outreach targeting academically low performing students. Provide administrative support to Management such as student and parent outreach when needed. Provide administrative support when needed by answering telephone calls, retrieving student supplies, and receiving guests. Provide administrative support with data entry for internal client database, Apricot 360.
IN-STATE TRAVEL
Participate in Alumni outreach efforts in collaboration with the various NAC Teams. Potential travel within California one to two times a semester, including visits to community colleges, public universities, and private institutions. Trips may be same-day or overnight depending on distance and business needs.
COMMUNICATION
Serve as frontline communication personnel with students to disseminate information pertaining to events/activities in the centers. Use a NAC work email account and approved online platforms for all work-related communication and respond in a timely manner. Maintain NAC employee social media accounts current and appropriate according to NAC policies. Participate and actively contribute to discussion on organizational updates during general staff meetings.
FACILITY/OPERATIONS
Provide assistance with keeping general cleanliness of the centers as is needed. Assist with overseeing safety of students on site; keeping track of all doors to ensure students follow entry/exit protocols. OTHER Maintain current and knowledgeable on trends, policies, and issues relevant to educational equity and higher education. Perform other duties as assigned and/or as needed to meet operation and program goals.

Good academic standing Successful student in at least one subject but also academically well rounded Excellent communication skills. Adaptable to a high-paced environment. Ability to work one-on-one and in small groups. Ability to manage in a classroom setting. Ability to multi-task and set priorities. Demonstrates initiative and attention to detail. Interpersonal skills - personable and friendly - with ability to interact with diverse individuals. Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
