- Job title and description: Peer Educator The Learning Commons invites students to apply for the Peer Educator position as a Peer Tutor or SI Leader.
Job Description:
- Provide academic assistance in the form of Peer Tutoring or Supplemental Instruction in identified courses.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve skills, to continue to grow cultural competence, and reflections skills
- Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, languages skills, and experiences
- Work in a collaborative and interactive learning process with the students: using facilitating techniques, collaborative learning techniques, active listening skills, questioning strategies as the primary method to understand student needs, prior knowledge, skills, and monitor progress
- Guide student participation, evaluate student performance, and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement
- Provide strategies on how to learn through study strategies (i.e. time management, note
- taking, text book reading, test taking)
- Maintain neat, up to date, accurate and complete records, and help to maintain an orderly work environment.
- Recognize primary role to help students learn and become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners.
- Assist Lead Coordinator and SI Coordinator with outreach and marketing of program through campus events and mediums.
- Assists Coordinators with recruitment of future Peer Educators.
- Participate in program and session assessment activities.
- Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources.
- Regularly meet with Supervisor and Mentor for debriefing sessions. SI Leaders
- Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings.
- Plan and facilitate two to three (2-3) study sessions per week throughout the semester using strategies learned through the SIL training workshop.
- Maintain contact throughout the semester with professor teaching the course.
Embedded Tutors:
- Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings.
- Schedule 4-6 drop in hours per week throughout the semester

- Undergraduate students must be registered/enrolled in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units.
- Post-baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units.
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or more on a 4-point scale
- Must show content-competency in the course(s) in which study sessions will be led, generally determined by the professor and generally determined by a grade of "B" or better.
- Strong organization, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Required to attend Tutor Orientations prior to start of semester and Tutor trainings/meetings throughout the semester
- Friendly, patient, inclusive, empathetic, and nonjudgmental manner
- Willingness to listen and communicate ideas clearly
- Open-minded, flexible, and adaptable to change
- Able to maintain punctuality and consistent attendance
- Able to work under pressure and appropriately handle difficult situations
- Willing to learn and to accept supervision and evaluation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Junior or Senior Classification (SI Leader Only)
- Prior enrollment with the professor teaching the course for Peer Educators embedded in the class.
