Tutors provide individual and small group tutoring sessions in subjects where the tutor is qualified and recommended by a faculty member. The tutor facilitates learning as a guide and coach to assist the student in becoming a successful, independent learner. Tutoring aims to increase and enhance mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course. Tutors integrate practical study and learning strategies to maximize the students potential for academic progress. As a Student Success Center team member, tutors must contact instructors and maintain ongoing communication with the Student Success Center Coordinator. Tutors are also expected to refer students to other appropriate college resources. Tutoring is a supplement to teaching. Responsibilities 1. Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning. This can be done on a one-to-one or small-group basis. 2. Facilitate tutor sessions with SWTJC students in-person or online via Microsoft TEAMS, based on student preference. 3. Maintain a consistent weekly schedule of work hours in the Student Success Center for scheduled appointments using booking appointment software, Setmore. 4. Meet with the instructor (s) of the course (s) you are tutoring, discuss your role as a tutor, and obtain any information that will assist you in tutoring effectively. 5. Visit classes in your subject area to let students know of your availability. 6. Post fliers each semester to promote the Student Success Center and notify students of your availability. 7. Complete the required tutor-training seminar at the start of the semester as required by the Special Programs Lead. 8. Keep regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms (individual tutor forms and weekly tutor logs) 9. Make appropriate referrals to other campus resources and inform the Student Success Center Coordinator of any referrals. 10. When not tutoring, develop handouts and other instructional materials, work on projects assigned by the Student Success Center Coordinator, and help to keep the center running smoothly and efficiently. 11. Complete monthly timesheets accurately and submit them online via Self-Service on time. 12. Exhibit an excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. 13. Maintain absolute confidentiality concerning academic progress or personal information concerning students. 14. Exhibit appropriate and professional behavior at all times. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED (unless special authorization is given) 2.5+ GPA A or B grade in the courses(s) to be tutored, exempt from the course, or an instructor recommendation. Complete recommendation forms from two different instructors from the appropriate department.
