- Seasonal Positions, No Benefits Youth Baseball/Softball Umpires

Note:
There will be a mandatory introductory meeting held on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. at Del Valle Park, 5939 Henrilee St., Lakewood 90713 . Expectations and requirements of the position will be covered, and the schedule for all subsequent meetings will be provided. All meetings and trainings are mandatory. Please click here for a copy of the recruitment brochure. Officiate baseball/softball games. All games take place during the week (in the evenings) and on Saturdays. Umpires typically work 5- 10 hours per week, up to a maximum of 28 hours. Typical game durations are as follows; baseball
- 2 hours, softball
- 1.5 hours, t-ball/coach pitch
- 1 hour.
NO PRIOR OFFICIATING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Skills & Abilities :
Learn and apply baseball/softball rules and officiating mechanics; and work cooperatively with players, coaches and parents.Physical Abilities :
Able to see and hear within normal ranges; stand for extended periods of time. Final Selection will be based upon exam scores and evaluation of application. The first required training session is scheduled for Monday, May 11, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. at Del Valle Park, 5939 Henrilee St., Lakewood 90713. Selected candidates must submit a certificate documenting that, within the last two years, they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. Certificates must be submitted to the Recreation & Community Services Department by the date of hire. The certificate must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency.Selection Procedure:
All properly submitted applications will be reviewed and evaluated. Those candidates appearing to have the best qualifications for the position will be invited to participate in the examination process which may require any combination of the following: a written examination, a performance examination and one or more oral interviews. Not all applicants may be tested or interviewed.Please Note :
Successful candidates will not be eligible to serve as Lakewood Youth Sports (LYS) volunteer coaches for the same sport and season in the competitive divisions ( E xception: Smurf non-competitive division). The employment of relatives can create undesirable results, particularly in connection with performance evaluation, discipline, and general morale of other workers. Therefore, it is the city's policy that no relative of any City officer or employee to which this resolution applies shall be employed, if said City officer or employee is in a supervisory, lead or subordinate position over said relative in the areas of hiring, setting compensation, discipline or termination. Employment offers are conditional, based upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening for safety-sensitive positions. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense. Candidates are cautioned not to quit their jobs or give notice to their current employers until they are determined to be medically qualified.TUBERCULOSIS TESTING
Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency.POSSESSION OF A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE
Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.LOYALTY OATH OR AFFIRMATION
All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment.EMERGENCY SERVICE
All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.PROBATIONARY PERIOD
