TEACHER - EARLY EDUCATION PROGRAM

Head of Early Education Status:
Salaried, exempt, full-time, 10-month position
Purpose:
To plan, supervise and implement the program in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the school. To provide a warm, nurturing and giving environment in the classroom and on the playground where self-concepts are enhanced, independence is encouraged, and children are respected. To guide, observe and interact with children as they work and play.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a program that meets the academic and developmental needs of the children.
- Provide for naptime. Soft music/story tapes should be played and backs rubbed to assist in relaxation. Children must stay on their mat for the duration of the rest period.
- Join the children during snack and lunch, encouraging them to eat safely, politely, and to clean their area when finished. Engage the students in conversation during snack and lunch.
- Cooperate with and uphold respect for the other teachers. Set and uphold assigned schedules - outside play, breaks, music, art, chapel, and lunch.
- Treat each child with dignity and respect. A child's health, safety, physical and emotional needs are to be consistently monitored. This includes cleanliness, toileting, shoe tying, crying, etc. Seek assistance and write reports in regards to difficult children or continuous problems - neglect will not solve the problem.
- Ensure that children who become ill or injured are seen by the school nurse. Write up a report for their parents and file.
- Supervision of children is essential for safety and well-being of the children, supervision of all students by sight and sound at all times is required; children are NEVER to be left unattended.
- Attend grade-level, division and school wide meetings and in-service training as required.
- Immediately report needed repair of equipment, classrooms, or materials to the Head of EEP.
- Prepare and provide a Sub Packet in your room. Include a list of room duties, rules, and procedures, fire escape and earthquake plans, locations of pertinent information and first aid kit and special information regarding children, such as allergies.
- Attend all parent-teacher functions.
- Assist the Head of Early Education with the organization of materials and inventory of supplies and keep equipment in good repair.
- Support the School and its mission.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of Early Education and Head of School.
Environment:
- Ensure teacher to child ratios are maintained at all times. Preschool 2's is 1:6, Preschool 3's and 4's is 1:8, and JK is 1:9 ratio. If needed, you may go to the state ratio of 1:12.
- Create an inviting environment with safe, attractive, and developmentally appropriate equipment that is appealing to children. Materials are to be clean and rotated monthly to allow children the opportunity to explore and learn from a variety of materials.
- The classroom should be organized in a manner that is child oriented, interactive, and primarily maintained by the children. Materials are not to be cluttered or stacked.
- Classrooms are to be kept clean. Refer to the Cleaning and Sanitation Frequency Table in your NAEYC Standards packet for guidelines to follow. Your classroom including the children's bathrooms are cleaned and sanitized each night.
- Each child is to have a clearly labeled cubby of their own. These are to be kept clean and neat.
- The walls and bulletin boards shall be current and neat and related to class activities and units.
- Chemicals or harmful materials may not be within a child's reach at any time.
- Liquids and foods hotter than 110 degrees Fahrenheit are to be kept out of children's reach.
- Ensure that all equipment and supplies that are needed on a daily basis are readily available.
Communication:
- Greet children and parents individually as they arrive and depart
- Ease children and parents with separation anxiety
- Maintain an open door policy and positive relationships with parents.
- Display daily information on parent or white board and keep up to date. Curriculum and snack menu is to be posted as well.
- Conduct parent conferences as specified throughout the year and as needed.
Use of Discipline:
- Physical punishment such as shaking or hitting is never to be used on a child.
- Psychological disciplines, such as derogatory remarks, or threats may never be used.
- Food is never to be withheld as a discipline measure.
- Positive reinforcement and modeling of appropriate behavior must be used as a means of teaching appropriate behavior.
- Withdraw and redirection will be used for discipline.
- Teachers are to model, encourage and facilitate conflict resolution between students.
Records :
- All records are to be kept confidential. Information about a child is not to be shared with anyone other than the child's parents/legal guardians
- Daily attendance is to be recorded.
- Make daily observations regarding a child's activity, progress and behavior. These should include strengths and limitations.
- Report to parent and copy to file any incidents or injuries.
- Assessments are to be completed on time and given to the Head of Early Education for review by date specified at the beginning of the year. Comments in assessments are to be respectful and constructive.
- When a child is exhibiting persistent, serious, and/or challenging behavior, begin documentation of antecedents, behavior exhibited, consequences (what the child is gaining from the behaviors, i.e. Attention, avoidance of a task, etc.), and your response. The documentation is to be kept confidential and only shared with the Head of Early Education and the child's parents.
- If there is a suspicion of child abuse, document all observations including dates, times, change in child/parent behavior.
Refer to child abuse reporting policy in employee handbook for procedures.
Curriculum:
- Meet weekly with team teachers to plan and share ideas and information.
- Curriculum may be altered based on assessment results of students.
- Curriculum must meet NAEYC and IB requirements as set by IB Coordinator and Head of Early Education.
- Meet the needs of the individual child with concern for interest, individuality, and pace of learning.
- Be sensitive to individuals' cultural and socioeconomic background, including home language.
- Lesson plans are to be posted on your parent board no later than 8 am Monday morning for the week.
- Conduct a daily circle time, setting the tone and curriculum for the day.
- Videos shown in the classroom must be related to the unit of study.
Videos must be rated G and with prior approval of the Head of Early Education.
Minimum Requirements:
1. 24 ECE units completed prior to start date and completed Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Early Child Development or a related field. 2. Strong understanding of developmental levels of children and corresponding curriculum. 3. Understand best teaching and appropriate discipline practices. 4. Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus (internal and external). 5. Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders of the school. 6. Highly ethical team player. 7. High energy, self-starter with ability to successfully prioritize and multi-task in an atmosphere in which time sensitive deadlines are the norm, as are interruptions. 8. Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Google Workspace and MS office
