PRIMARY PURPOSE
Provide specially designed instruction to students with learning activities, experiences and behavioral coaching lessons designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, and social growth. Work teachers and staff to design and deliver/support differentiated instruction via in class instruction or an online credit platform in a self-contained special education setting. Work collaboratively with the campus school psychologist and district special education coordinator to maintain a therapeutic and instructional climate for students with identified emotional and/or behavioral disabilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of behavior principles and ability to use skills in determining effective strategies, reinforcement schedules and consequences
  • Ability to remain calm, non-reactive, consistent and positive when a student demonstrates non-preferred behavior
  • Knowledge of the unique and special needs of students in assigned area
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to effectively instruct students in social skills development and behavior strategies
  • Ability to establish a positive student and teacher rapport
Experience:
  • At least 3 years of successful experience working with students in a self-contained behavior program
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Therapeutic Education Center @ Friendswood Revised 6/7/2021- DD 1. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. 2. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. 3. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides(s). 4. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process. 5. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits. 6. Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of FISD. 7. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students. 8. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and each student's identified Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). 9. Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including the use of CPI restraint techniques for self-injurious or dangerous behavior as needed 10. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 10. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, district support staff and teachers, maintaining professional relationships. 11. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills including job-alike meetings with district staff. 12. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Compiling, maintaining, and filing documents as required 13. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. 14. Prepare lessons and provide direct instruction on social skills and coping strategies aligned to behavior intervention plan and/or behavior goals and objectives. 15. Develop and implement positive behavioral strategies that fulfill the requirements of the district's behavior program. 16. Develop and maintain documentation of behavior intervention plans 17. Evaluate individual student progress based on functional behavioral assessment and data on a regular basis 18. Participate as a member of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee and make sound recommendations based on data and the individual needs of each student. Work to design, modify or accommodate the curriculum, instructional techniques, and/or classroom behavior expectations as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in IEPs 20. Supervise students' behavior throughout the school day, both inside and outside of the classroom including but not limited to the lunchroom, bus duty, hallways, and outdoor instructional areas. 21. Conduct case management duties according to the special education department guidelines and procedures. 22. Perform other duties as may be assigned. Working Conditions

        Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
          Lifting:
          Occasional light lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds if supporting a lift with training provided)
            Environment:
            Works in a school/office setting; occasional work outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather) to travel between buildings/districts or in the preparation/completion of meetings; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
              Attendance:
              Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
                Mental Demands:
                Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions. Exposure to students with significant verbal and physical aggression.
