We believe children learn best through curiosity, meaningful experiences, hands-on exploration, outdoor recreation, and strong relationships. At Pac West, education is not one-size-fits-all. Our educators work alongside students to help foster independence, confidence, creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. Nature of Work Under general supervision, the Educator / Learning Guide provides meaningful instruction and support to students enrolled in an alternative educational setting. This position emphasizes child-led, project-based learning, individualized instruction, relationship building, and experiential education. Educators at Pac West create engaging learning environments that honor student voice, interests, strengths, and developmental needs. Staff support students through academic instruction, social-emotional growth, behavior support, outdoor experiences, and collaborative projects. The ideal candidate is flexible, creative, relationship-focused, and passionate about alternative education models that prioritize curiosity, connection, and real-world learning. Duties and Responsibilities Instruction & Student Support Facilitate individualized and small-group instruction in a flexible alternative education setting for children ages 8-10 or 10-12 yrs old Develop and implement engaging, project-based learning experiences inspired by student interests and developmental goals. Support child-led learning by encouraging inquiry, exploration, problem-solving, and creativity. Adapt instruction to meet varying academic, behavioral, emotional, and social needs. Assist in the development and implementation of individualized learning plans and behavioral supports as needed. Utilize alternative curriculum approaches, hands-on activities, outdoor learning, and experiential opportunities. Assessment & Documentation Monitor and assess student progress through portfolios, observations, anecdotal records, and authentic assessment methods. Maintain accurate, confidential student records and documentation regarding progress, strengths, goals, and support needs. Track growth in both academic and social-emotional development. Collaboration & Communication Build strong partnerships with families, staff, community members, and related service providers. Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs. Collaborate with fellow educators and administrators to continually improve programming and student supports. Participate in team planning, meetings, and professional development opportunities. Environment & Program Development Create a safe, inclusive, nurturing, and engaging learning environment. Foster positive student relationships through trust, mentorship, and consistency. Support outdoor recreation, experiential learning, field experiences, and community-based opportunities. Contribute to ongoing growth and improvement of Pac West programming and culture. Perform other duties as assigned by administration. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred; teaching certification/licensure welcomed but not required. Two or more years of experience working with school age children or youth in educational, childcare, recreational, behavioral, or educational related settings preferred. Experience in alternative education, project-based learning, special education, trauma-informed care, or behavioral support is highly valued. Essential Job Functions Ability to supervise and engage students in classroom, outdoor, and community-based settings. Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners. Ability to plan, organize, document, and implement educational programming. Ability to safely lift, carry, push, pull, and move classroom materials and equipment as needed. Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and responsive in fast-paced or unexpected situations.
