Position Overview Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager and collaborating with R D design new product development (NPD), manufacturing new product introduction (NPI), and factory operations teams, the Electro Optical Test Software Engineer will be responsible for developing test software and database datalogging solutions within the New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering department. This includes design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, cost estimating, and process improvement using LEAN principles. Responsibilities Work collaboratively with senior electro‑optical engineers to support all phases of new product development (NPD) and manufacturing new product introduction (NPI). Learn and apply fundamental principles of functional test software development, including software architecture, requirements, calibration methods, and execution of test code for undersea communication equipment. Assist design engineers in setting up and performing experiments to test fiber‑optic amplifiers, ROADMs, high‑voltage equipment, and firmware operation. Develop foundational skills in electro‑optic test methods, test systems, and procedures, including data acquisition, automation platforms, and laboratory and production test equipment. Support the transition of new products, software tools, and certification methods from R D into the manufacturing environment under guidance from experienced engineers. Participate in troubleshooting activities to identify and resolve basic hardware and software issues, escalating complex problems as appropriate. Gain exposure to continuous improvement practices, including design optimization and value engineering initiatives to improve product quality and reduce cost. Develop and maintain test software using C, with guidance and code reviews from senior team members. Assist in developing database parsers, stored procedures, and SQL queries used for test data storage and analysis. Support development and use of instrument drivers and software interfaces for optical and electrical test equipment. Contribute to the development of simple graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to support equipment control and troubleshooting. Learn and use common industrial communication interfaces such as GPIB, Ethernet, RS‑485, and I2C. Build familiarity with corporate networking concepts including Ethernet configuration, TCP/IP basics, VLANs, and network troubleshooting. Develop technical knowledge of fiber‑optic amplifiers, ROADMs, lasers, and optical communication systems through hands‑on work and training. Gain practical experience using optical and electrical test equipment such as power meters, attenuators, switches, optical spectrum analyzers, digital multimeters, DAQs, and oscilloscopes. Learn to analyze test and measurement data to extract performance metrics and support engineering decisions. Become familiar with quality and reliability processes used in high‑reliability product development, including characterization, calibration, and measurement uncertainty concepts. Support development and execution of automated test and measurement solutions for electrical and optical components and subsystems. Assist with qualifying new products and test systems for manufacturing and supporting new product introduction activities. Use Windows‑based development and test tools such as Visual Studio, LabWindows/CVI, and TestStand. Demonstrate the ability to learn quickly, manage multiple tasks, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively in a team environment. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Qualifications Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a contributing team member, collaborating with multi‑disciplinary engineering teams under guidance from senior staff. Ability to read and understand written test methods and specifications and translate them into structured, modular test software with appropriate error and exception handling. Working knowledge of Git‑based source control systems (e.g., GitLab), including basic branching, commits, and code review participation. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field, with coursework or exposure to software development. Familiarity with software development environments and tools; ability to learn and adopt new frameworks, languages, and workflows. Foundational understanding of electro‑optical circuits and electrical circuit board design principles. Hands‑on exposure to laboratory test equipment and basic measurement techniques. Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with engineers across multiple disciplines in a team‑based development environment. Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document work, ask questions, and present technical information at an appropriate level. Exposure to electro‑optical or electronics manufacturing processes preferred. Experience working within a design or development team environment through internships, co‑ops, academic projects, or early‑career roles. Basic familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., Oracle or SAP) used in manufacturing or operations environments is a plus. Experience or coursework using Windows‑based development and test tools such as Visual Studio, LabWindows/CVI, and TestStand, or the ability to learn these tools quickly. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines. Demonstrated curiosity, willingness to learn, and ability to accept feedback and mentoring in a technical development environment.
