Job Description

Benefits Category:
This is an hourly, non-exempt, position. Benefits eligible if working 30 or more hours per week. PTO eligible if working 35 or more hours per week. ESOP benefits upon meeting plan entry requirements.
Schedule:
Full-time and part-time positions available with flexible scheduling. Morning, afternoon, evening, weekend, and overnight shifts available (includes every other weekend). What you will bring to our team: A DSS must understand the different needs of individuals with disabilities. As a DSS you must have the ability to exercise flexibility and assertiveness, have a positive work ethic, problem solve, and navigate crisis situations effectively. A DSS must also be able to work without direct supervision. Possess a valid driver's license and pass a Motor Vehicle Record Check. Must not be disqualified by criminal background studies. Meet the physical requirements as outlined in this position description and physical assessment form. (pushing/pulling, lifting, bending etc.) Able to read and write in English. Able to document information electronically. Prior experience or training not required, but desirable. A Direct Support Specialist (DSS) provides care to individuals in their homes and in our community. The people we serve are vulnerable adults and children in need of support in their daily activities. A DSS must have a high level of sensitivity to the needs of individuals with disabilities. Ability to exercise flexibility, have a positive work ethic, manage crisis situations effectively and problem solve. Must be able to work without direct supervision. A DSS provides direct care to individuals based on their needs which may include:
Employment Services:
Utilizing person centered processes and discovering individuals interests and career path. Assisting person to write a resume and cover letter. Complete job searches using a variety of methods such as website searches and visiting area businesses. Coach person to enhance their interview skills. Supporting person on the job, following company standards and role modeling the desired work traits. Seek out ways to teach person to be more independent and find natural supports for person. Providing ongoing maintenance of support. Communicating with person routinely regarding progress on the job and increase work related skill development.
Residential Services:
Assisting individuals with dressing, grooming, hygiene, and other daily living functions. Assisting individuals with bedtime routines, administering medications, physical therapy, etc. Supporting and teaching individuals independent living skills i.e.: routines, meal prep, cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, proper hygiene, medications, appointments, shopping, etc. Assisting individuals in accessing the community and participating in recreation and leisure activities. Assisting to resolve crisis situations as they arise. Maintain competency in behavior management protocols outlined by the needs of the individual's program requirements.
