  • 9a Position Summary Provides Basic level emergency medical care to patients at the scene, and during transport.
Performs basic level assessment of patients' trauma or medical related conditions. Operation of emergency vehicle to and from the scene. Position Accountabilities Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Consistently and accurately adheres to all NHS EMS standard operating guidelines, policies, procedures and practices. Observes and performs Basic level assessment and treatment of patients' trauma or medical related condition: recognizes, identifies, and interprets serious situations and informs Medical Control. Initiates appropriate measures and treatment according to NHS EMS protocols and as advised by Medical Control. Operates an ambulance vehicle, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls; transports patients. Must have a general knowledge of Cherokee County and the primary coverage area assigned to, and the ability to read and comprehend maps and directions. Demonstrates ability to respond quickly and make decisions using good judgment under stress in hazardous situations and human relationships. Operates and monitors basic emergency medical equipment including but not limited to mechanical C.P.R. devices, suction and oxygen equipment per EMT Basic protocols and Medical Control. Must have a general knowledge of Cherokee County and the primary coverage area assigned to, and the ability to read and comprehend maps and directions. Communicates with NHS EMS Dispatchers and other agencies while in transport or responding to calls. Utilizes proper radio technique according to the EMD system, FCC regulations, and Cherokee County Communication Center and Ambulance Service standard operating procedures. Timely completes ambulance patient care documents, efficiently documenting all medical care and/or treatment, all patient information, any insurance information and any and all other information requested. Documentation is expected to be completed in same shift as call, with accurate and appropriate information. Shares responsibility for inventory of and maintaining adequate supplies and equipment as well as general upkeep and cleaning of the ambulance vehicle Performs shift check of all supplies and equipment in ambulance and ambulance maintenance check according to NHS EMS standard operating procedures and guidelines Be responsible for the on duty position and to not leave the position until proper relief is obtained Efficiently operates machines including, but not limited to, computer systems, keyboards, adding, calculating, facsimile, printers, shredders, telephones, two-way radios, scanners and duplicating machines Consistently adheres to safe workplace standard operating guidelines, policies, procedures and practices, and looks out for and reports deficiencies. Shares responsibility for security of buildings and personnel Performs regular cleaning duties to maintain a clean, neat and safe work environment Maintains personal responsibility of time clock/ entry verification Strong organizational skills required with the ability to effectively follow up as needed. Attend required meetings and training sessions necessary to maintain efficiency, accuracy and knowledge. Maintain an acceptable attendance record, with regular and reliable attendance, on site at a designated NHS EMS workplace. Be responsible to provide direction and instruction to EMT students of all levels of training while students are on ambulance clinical training, up to the employee's own level of licensure. May be called upon from time to time to provide public relation type work in the community (e.g. blood pressure clinics, ambulance tours, etc.) As assigned, assists and mentors other staff (including students if applicable) in order to help onboard and educate newly hired employees and/or employees changing job duties or positions. The schedule may vary as needed to facilitate the needs of NHS EMS, and may include weekdays and weekends, daytime, evening, and night time hours, consecutive shifts, and/or holidays to be worked. The schedule may include mandatory and/or voluntary overtime with frequent long, unpredictable hours. The employee must have the ability to maintain assigned work hours. The schedule may include interrupted, irregular and unpredictable meal and/or other breaks. This position is deemed a safety-sensitive position. It is job-related and consistent with business necessity for the employee to be unimpaired by prescription or other substances while on duty. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with patients and patient's families, employees, other healthcare professionals, outside agencies, and others involved with the day-to-day operations of NHS EMS.
