Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran- and woman-owned company with locations nationwide. HX5 is currently seeking an Aerospace Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center. The selected candidate will support the HLS Site Availability Lead and the lunar landing site availability analysis team. This effort is monitored by the System Architectures and Analytical Studies Branch at NASA GRC, which provides research and engineering to define and analyze communications system architectures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Support NASA's mission of landing Boots on the Moon by 2028, which also supports NASA's goal of having two lunar landings in 2028. These ambitious goals require a human Landing System (HLS), which is being developed by competing HLS providers for each mission. The selected candidate will join an established team that is conducting independent analyses of the data, results, and recommendations delivered by the HLS providers. These insight efforts will involve complex data analysis and synthesis of information that includes geological and environmental properties, spacecraft capabilities, mission design factors, launch window opportunities, and communication availability. Potential landing sites are first assessed to confirm that the spacecraft can land safely. Then, the site availability analysis determines the optimal set of landing sites for solar illumination, Earth to Moon communication coverage, lunar surface communication coverage, and similar requirements. Primarily, the selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Provide incremental and final results, documentation, and software scripts to support the concurrent analysis cycles needed by NASA's return to the Moon
  • Review plans for follow-on cycles and make recommendations for improving the lunar site selection process
  • Attend and participate in weekly meetings to provide status and support collaboration between the multi-NASA center HLS site availability team This technical effort will identify and select potential lunar landing sites using the Glenn Research Center Communication Analysis Suite (GCAS) software package and information from previous analysis cycles.
GCAS was developed at GRC to simulate potential orbits of spacecraft and to optimize characteristics of a mission in a visual representation. In addition, analysis and synthesis of data related to mission constraints, figures of merit, and the logistics of orbital trajectories will be required to support the site selections.
Required Skills:
