Job Title:
CAD Drafter/Designer Job Description This CAD Drafter/Designer role focuses on creating and updating detailed 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models using CAD software to support complex utility and energy-related projects. You will translate detailed customer requirements, data sheets, and supplier specifications into accurate engineering plans, designs, and documentation while ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and operational requirements. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to important infrastructure projects, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and develop your technical skills within a professional, hybrid work environment. Responsibilities Create and update sketches, working drawings, and contract documents using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software for utility and engineering projects. Prepare accurate 2D and 3D models that reflect detailed customer requirements, engineering specifications, and design standards. Prepare engineering plans, designs, specifications, and standards to support project objectives and regulatory compliance. Develop and prepare engineering studies to support specific program objectives and help derive appropriate investment levels. Identify, conduct, and document research related to system compliance requirements, ensuring designs meet applicable codes and standards. Prepare cost estimates and project evaluations to support planning, budgeting, and decision-making activities. Interact and coordinate directly with internal and external customers to understand project requirements and translate them into clear design deliverables. Perform or manage the creation and updating of job work orders and project documentation, including tasks, calculations, and supporting records. Conduct office and field research, including measurement and verification of equipment data, and create or update equipment records based on findings. Direct and perform data and records management activities to ensure accurate, organized, and accessible project information. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements in all assigned work. Coordinate the work of others who assist in specific assignments, including contractors and consultants, to ensure timely and accurate completion of tasks. Identify improvements to department standards, processes, templates, tools, and databases, and implement updates with oversight from more sr team members. Solve technical and project-related problems independently, demonstrating the ability to work around barriers and propose practical solutions. Communicate technical information clearly and effectively to team members and internal and external customers, both verbally and in writing. Review and check simple project work completed by others and provide basic technical guidance to less experienced personnel. Prepare and maintain documentation to support design drawings, ensuring traceability and consistency across all project deliverables. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and detailed customer specifications to ensure design accuracy and alignment with requirements. Essential Skills 1-2 years of experience using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. Ability to create and update detailed 2D and 3D models using CAD tools. Strong drafting and design skills, including experience preparing engineering drawings, plans, and specifications. Ability to read and comprehend detailed customer requirements, data sheets, and supplier specifications. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints accurately. Familiarity with drafting techniques, engineering concepts, and engineering terminology. Organization and documentation skills, including maintaining accurate project records and design files. Prioritization and project management skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively. Ability to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements. Strong communication skills to effectively interact with internal and external customers and convey technical information clearly. Ability to work independently to solve problems and overcome project-related barriers. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D is a plus. Experience in design, preparation of specifications, technical field work, or system studies. Experience in project cost estimating or scheduling. Experience working with both internal and external customers on engineering or utility projects. Knowledge of engineering economics and analysis. Experience with utility or utility design projects, including blueprint reading and related documentation. Familiarity with data and records management practices in an engineering or technical environment. Work Environment This role is based at a site in Puyallup, Washington, with a hybrid work arrangement that combines on-site presence with remote work flexibility. You will work within a professional engineering and utilities environment, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders on complex infrastructure and energy-related projects. The position is structured as a 24-month contract with the possibility of conversion to a full-time role, offering paid time off and holiday pay during the contract period. You will use CAD software and related engineering tools, including Autodesk Civil 3D where applicable, to produce and manage technical drawings, models, and documentation. The work environment emphasizes accuracy, compliance with codes and standards, and effective communication, providing opportunities for professional growth and contributions to high-impact projects. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Puyallup, WA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
