Position OverviewWe are seeking a meticulous Sheet Metal Detailer to produce accurate shop drawings, part layouts, and material takeoffs for sheet metal fabrication and installation. The role focuses on translating engineering and construction documents into detailed fabrication drawings, bills of materials, and CNC nesting files while coordinating closely with project managers, fabricators, and field teams to ensure constructability, cost control, and on-time delivery.
Key ResponsibilitiesCreate clear, accurate shop drawings, fabrication details, and assembly drawings from engineering plans, sketches, and site measurements.
Produce bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists, and CNC nesting files to optimize material usage and minimize waste.
Review architectural and structural drawings to verify dimensions, tolerances, and interface conditions with other building systems.
Coordinate with project managers, estimators, fabricators, and site supervisors to resolve design or constructability issues and update drawings per project revisions.
Ensure drawings comply with company standards, industry codes, and client specifications; maintain revision control and documentation.
Perform site visits or measure existing conditions when required to verify fit and integration with field conditions.
Support procurement and production teams by clarifying drawing details, responding to RFIs, and providing timely revisions.
Use CAD and detailing software to maintain drawing libraries, standard parts, and fabrication templates.
Assist in project scheduling and material planning by providing accurate lead times and quantities for fabrication.
Conduct quality checks on drawings and shop output to ensure parts match documentation and installation requirements.
QualificationsTechnical diploma or certificate in mechanical drafting, CAD, or related field; or equivalent hands-on experience in sheet metal detailing.3+ years of experience detailing sheet metal for fabrication and construction (shop or field), with a portfolio of completed shop drawings.
Proficiency in CAD/detailing software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, Revit, or equivalent; experience with nesting/CAM software (e.g., SigmaNEST, ProNest) is a plus.
Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication methods, common materials, duct/ductwork, flashing, trim, and fasteners.
Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings and to integrate sheet metal systems into overall construction.
Good math skills, attention to dimensional tolerances, and knowledge of fabrication fit-up practices.
Experience working with construction teams and familiarity with site conditions, installation sequencing, and safety considerations.
Project management awareness or experience coordinating tasks, prioritizing workload, and communicating progress with project managers.
Excellent communication skills, problem-solving mindset, and ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Willingness to travel to job sites as needed and to adapt to changing project demands.
