Full-Time About Us Kartchner Engineering is a multidisciplinary MEP consulting engineering firm delivering high-quality building systems design for commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, educational, and multi-family projects. We are seeking a Plumbing Designer with 3-5 years of experience who is technically capable, detail-oriented, and motivated to grow within a collaborative engineering environment. This position offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types while developing technical expertise, project coordination skills, and increasing design responsibility. Position Summary The Electrical Designer is responsible for the design, layout, and coordination of electrical systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, and municipal projects. Working under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), the Electrical Designer develops construction documents, performs calculations, coordinates with project stakeholders, and supports projects from concept through construction. This position requires a strong understanding of electrical building systems, applicable codes, and MEP project delivery processes. The Electrical Designer serves as a key technical resource and may mentor junior drafters and designers. Essential Responsibilities Electrical System Design
  • Design electrical systems for new construction, renovations, and tenant improvement projects.
  • Develop electrical plans and specifications for: o Power distribution systems o Interior and exterior lighting systems o Emergency and standby power systems o Fire alarm systems o Low-voltage and communications systems o Equipment power connections and controls
  • Perform electrical load calculations and circuiting.
  • Size feeders, branch circuits, transformers, panels, and electrical equipment.
  • Prepare one-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment schedules.
  • Assist in the development of project specifications and technical reports. Project Coordination
  • Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, plumbing, structural, civil, architectural, and owner requirements.
  • Participate in design review and coordination meetings.
  • Resolve design conflicts and identify practical construction solutions.
  • Collaborate with project managers and engineers to maintain project schedules and budgets. Construction Documents
  • Prepare and review construction drawings and technical documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with project requirements, company standards, and applicable codes.
  • Review drawings produced by drafters and junior designers for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and revision control. Construction Administration
  • Respond to contractor Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Review shop drawings, product submittals, and equipment data.
  • Conduct site visits and field investigations as required.
  • Assist with punch lists, commissioning support, and project closeout activities.
  • Verify field conditions and support as-built documentation efforts. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
  • Perform quality reviews of design documents before issuance.
  • Apply National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements and applicable energy codes.
  • Support development and maintenance of company design standards and best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project delivery efficiency and design quality. Leadership & Mentoring
  • Provide technical guidance to drafters and junior designers.
  • Assist in training team members on design software, drafting standards, and electrical design practices.
  • Promote collaboration and knowledge sharing within the engineering team. Required Qualifications Education
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience
  • 3-7 years of electrical design experience within an MEP consulting, engineering, or design-build environment.
  • Experience preparing electrical construction documents for commercial or industrial projects. Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Strong understanding of building electrical systems and construction methods.
  • Working knowledge of: o National Electrical Code (NEC) o Energy codes and standards o Lighting and power system design o Electrical calculations and equipment selection
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Core Competencies
