Job Description

Caltrans manages more than 50,000 miles of California's highway and freeway lanes, provides inter-city rail services, permits more than 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports, and works with local agencies. Caltrans carries out its mission of providing a safe, sustainable, integrated, and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability, with six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration, and the Equipment Service Center. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire an Engineering Student Assistant in a learning capacity and under close supervision by Construction Engineers. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will assist with a wide range of assignments within the Construction unit.

in the Carpinteria, CA Office. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Knowledge of Excel and Word processing software.
Must possess the ability to:
Apply engineering classroom instructions to work situations. Learn procedures and methods. Satisfactorily carry out assignments. Do neat and accurate work. Follow instructions completely. Must possess and maintain eligibility to drive within the state of California and meet the established driving standards and requirements of Caltrans and UEI driver's policies
  • including participating in DMV record monitoring and completing assigned defensive driving training.
Possess the ability to:
Calculate slopes, measure angles, and make area calculations. Analyze and interpret transportation project data. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will assist in field reviews and in verifying field dimensions for roadway construction, provide checks on previously calculated quantities, perform water pollution control site inspections and document reviews. Assist the Field Engineer during all phases of construction, including earthwork operation, roadway paving, roadway excavation, signs and striping, drainage work and other construction operations by performing intermittent field inspection. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will perform engineering calculations, calculating quantities for payments, and drafting change orders including markups of plan sheets and preparing force account analyses. Tracking project expenditure and deadlines using Excel and other computer applications. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will file, copy work, data entry, archiving, preparing and compiling various reports, graphs, charts and letters. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will review project documents. In a learning capacity, the Engineering Student Assistant will review project schedules using Excel, computer scheduling software and other computer applications. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment. Approximately 50-75% field work will be required.
