Job Title:
Project Engineer II Job Description The Project Engineer II participates in the design, coordinattion, and deliverables for lower-level and mid-level building control systems from concept through closeout. This role combines hands-on controls design, material procurement, construction oversight, and commissioning support to ensure projects meet technical specifications, schedule, budget, and quality expectations. The Controls Project Engineer actively collaborates with project managers, senior design engineers, subcontractors, and field teams to provide reliable, cost-effective automation solutions and a smooth transition into warranty and service. Responsibilities Develop and maintain strong technical and product knowledge related to building control systems, automation, and project-specific requirements. Produce control system design drawings, sequences of operation, and submittals for lower-level control systems, while supporting senior design engineers on mid-level control system designs as needed. Research, select, and specify control system peripherals and end devices to meet project requirements and standards. Read and interpret project construction drawings and specifications to ensure all controls work complies with the defined scope and design intent. Provide value engineering ideas and cost reduction solutions to the project manager while maintaining system performance and quality. Manage material procurement for assigned projects, including selecting and ordering appropriate materials, coordinating shipments to job sites or other trades, and monitoring usage, cost, and inventory. Seek and obtain advantageous lead times and cost discounts on materials whenever possible. Update and modify existing control system designs and drawings to reflect field changes and produce accurate as-built documentation. Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including correspondence, requests for information, change orders, logs, and project schedules. Lead and manage change order processes, including identifying additional scope opportunities and effectively upselling expanded work where appropriate. Oversee project construction activities related to controls to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, material requirements, installation techniques, safety practices, and internal standards. Develop and maintain internal project construction schedules for the controls scope using third-party software such as Microsoft Project. Manage, support, and oversee all third-party commissioning activities for assigned projects to ensure systems are tested, verified, and documented. Lead the project closeout process for the controls scope, including turnover of documentation to the engineering team and/or project manager. Coordinate and manage all aspects of installation subcontractors' work, ensuring alignment with project schedules and quality standards. Manage and complete the project warranty transition process, including coordinating on-site visits for service personnel and ensuring a smooth handoff to service. Effectively manage time and cost budgets for assigned tasks across multiple projects. Communicate proactively and clearly with project team members, trade contractors, and general contractors regarding issues, obstacles, and information needs from the field. Prepare and submit daily and/or weekly work summary reports to project leadership as required. Track and submit weekly time allocations for multiple assigned projects accurately and on time. Practice safe work habits consistently and participate in the office safety program and any project-specific safety requirements. Attend and successfully complete OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 safety training classes. Take personal responsibility for completing assigned formal training and development plans on schedule. Participate actively in ongoing personal development related to processes, products, and systems used in the business. Execute all work to achieve high customer satisfaction and deliverables of the highest quality. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management is preferred, and/or 4-8 years of related work and engineering experience in the controls or construction industry. Strong mechanical aptitude with relevant technical school training or equivalent hands-on experience. Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and electrical schematics accurately. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Windows operating systems, and file structures. Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio for producing and modifying control system drawings and documentation. Understanding of network structure and web navigation as they relate to modern control systems is desired. High level of organization with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks to meet project schedules. Demonstrated ability to delegate work effectively and provide clear, constructive instructions to internal staff, subcontractors, and vendors. Ability to work independently and autonomously, taking full ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables. Valid California driver's license. Strong commitment to executing work that ensures high customer satisfaction and high-quality deliverables. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with automation systems and HVAC systems in a construction or controls environment. Background in mechanical systems and their integration with building controls. Proactive mindset with the ability to recognize what needs to be done and accomplish it with minimal supervision. Perseverance and resilience in pursuing challenging goals and overcoming obstacles. Ability to gather and synthesize information to generate new ideas and identify improved approaches (insight). Work Environment This role is based onsite in Pleasanton and involves regular presence at project locations and office settings. The Controls Project Engineer works closely with project managers, design engineers, subcontractors, and field personnel in a collaborative, schedule-driven environment. The position requires frequent use of computers and software tools such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, and Visio, as well as interaction with construction drawings, specifications, and control system hardware. Work may involve visiting active construction sites, participating in commissioning activities, and coordinating with installation subcontractors and service teams. Safety practices and participation in structured safety programs, including OSHA training, are an integral part of the work environment. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Pleasanton, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
