The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, u nder close supervision by a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor), in a learning capacity, the student assistant will perform engineering related duties resulting in experience and training in various technical field and office tasks relating to construction of transportation structures. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Basic knowledge of algebra, geometry, drafting, and English (12th-grade level). Ability to understand engineering concepts and perform accurate calculations. Ability to learn construction terminology, methods, and engineering software. Ability to apply basic concrete design and sampling principles. Ability to evaluate work methods and traffic conditions for safety. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Valid California driver's license required. Works under close supervision; errors are minimal and reviewed. Willingness to learn, perform detailed tasks, and adapt to changing assignments and schedules. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with making inspections for enforcing compliance with plans and specifications; inspecting work as to the quantity, quality, and methodology; recording manpower and equipment usage along with pertinent details; preparing documentation of the work performed. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with drafting, preparing contract pay estimates and other documents and reports involved in construction projects. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in reviewing and approving submittals and working drawings, preparation of contract plans, profiles, cross sections, details; determining quantities, including making fundamental mathematical calculations; performance of minor surveys. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
