The position focuses on pipelines and conveyance systems, process mechanical components, and treatment facility infrastructure that help communities reliably deliver safe drinking water, manage wastewater and stormwater, and meet evolving regulatory requirements. Projects range from water and wastewater treatment facilities and pump stations to distribution systems, sewer networks, stormwater systems, remediation sites, and lead service line programs. This role offers the opportunity to grow technically while taking on increased responsibility through hands‑on design, client interaction, and task‑level project leadership. Key Responsibilities Under general direction, prepares evaluations, calculations, and designs for basic to moderate‑complexity civil pipeline, conveyance, and process mechanical projects supporting water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Performs engineering analyses, data review, and technical reporting for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater utility projects, including treatment processes, collection and distribution systems, drainage, flood management, outfalls, wetlands, and sewer rehabilitation programs. Supports water quality evaluations, hydraulic modeling, and system analyses as required by project needs. Conducts site visits, field investigations, and constructability reviews to confirm design assumptions, ensure alignment with site conditions, and refine design criteria. Prepares technical specifications, cost estimates, and front‑end contract documents for publicly bid projects. Reviews draft plans, technical reports, and calculations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and project standards. Contributes to regulatory compliance initiatives, including lead and copper rule programs, MS4 and stormwater compliance efforts, and other environmental permitting or reporting requirements. Ensures firm quality standards, safety practices, and design procedures are consistently followed. Supports client‑facing work by managing discrete tasks or work packages, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and functioning as a Task Manager when appropriate. Mentors and provides technical guidance to junior engineers, reviews their work for quality and completeness, and supports their professional development. May contribute to technical papers, presentations, or industry publications. Performs other duties as assigned to support project and team needs. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline. 3 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Amount of Travel Required 5% Skills and Abilities Demonstrated understanding of engineering design principles related to civil conveyance and/or process mechanical systems. Working knowledge of computer‑aided design and drafting tools, including 3D and 4D CADD practices. Proficiency with Microsoft business applications such as Excel and Word. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical concepts clearly. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for this position based on the geographic location assigned to the position. Please note that pay ranges vary based on geographic location. In addition to geographic location, the company considers several other factors when extending an offer including but not limited to the role, function and associated responsibilities, the candidate's work experience, education/training and key skills. Additional Compensation All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
