This role is ideal for an engineer with experience in linear utility design who is passionate about building reliable, resilient public infrastructure and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders. The selected applicant will be expected to work on client site in Washington, DC, three days per week and in our Maryland office two days per week.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for water distribution and sewer collection pipeline projects. Support projects through planning, preliminary design, detailed design, permitting, bidding, and construction-phase services. Perform hydraulic calculations and, where applicable, modeling for water and wastewater systems. Develop plan and profile sheets, standard details, and technical reports for linear infrastructure improvements and rehabilitation projects. Coordinate with project managers, drafters/designers, surveyors, utility owners, and other engineering disciplines to deliver quality design packages on schedule. Conduct field investigations, site visits, and data collection to support design development and construction activities. Assist with permit applications and coordination with local agencies, regulatory authorities, and clients. Review shop drawings, respond to requests for information, and support construction administration as needed. Contribute to QA/QC reviews and help ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering discipline. 2-8+ years of experience in the planning and design of water, wastewater, or municipal utility infrastructure projects. Experience with water and sewer pipeline design, plan production, specifications, and cost estimating. Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar design software. Familiarity with applicable municipal, utility, and regulatory standards. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Valid driver's license and willingness to perform occasional field work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe. Experience with hydraulic modeling tools such as WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, InfoWater, or similar software. Experience supporting public-sector clients, capital improvement programs, or utility rehabilitation projects. Knowledge of permitting processes, construction-phase services, and utility coordination.
