Job Description

Job Title:
Building Engineer Job Description The Building Engineer operates and maintains critical plant utilities and production support systems, including boilers, compressors, chillers, and HVAC equipment. This role supports packaging and production operations, ensures reliable steam and utility performance, and uses a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to plan, track, and complete maintenance activities. The Building Engineer follows established safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and standard work practices, to maintain a safe and efficient facility. Responsibilities Operate and maintain boilers, compressors, chillers, and HVAC systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance. Support the installation, setup, and maintenance of packaging and production equipment, including both vertical and horizontal packaging machinery. Use the CMMS system to order parts, create and track work orders, and accurately document completed maintenance activities. Make appropriate adjustments to process equipment to maintain required steam quality and maximize energy and operational efficiency. Perform preventive maintenance on utility systems, packaging lines, and plant equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life. Assist with troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, plumbing, and basic electrical issues related to plant utilities and production equipment. Conduct steam and water testing as required to support safe and compliant boiler and utility operation. Immediately report any accidents, unsafe conditions, or hazardous incidents to the appropriate personnel. Prepare equipment and systems for maintenance using proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) and standard work procedures (SWP). Follow plant engineering and maintenance repair practices to support reliable manufacturing operations. Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and utility teams to support continuous production and facility uptime. Adhere to all plant safety rules, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and hygiene requirements while working on the production floor. Essential Skills At least 4 years of stationary engineering experience in a manufacturing facility or large commercial building environment. Active City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License. Hands-on experience operating and maintaining boilers, including boiler maintenance and steam system support. Proficiency with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting and routine maintenance. Experience working with compressors, chillers, and related utility equipment. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and maintenance repair on mechanical and utility systems. Familiarity with electrical systems related to plant utilities and production equipment at a maintenance technician level. Experience using a CMMS system to manage work orders, track maintenance tasks, and order parts. Knowledge of lockout/tagout (LOTO), standard work procedures (SWP), and safe work practices in an industrial environment. Ability to conduct basic steam testing and water testing to support boiler and utility operations. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues in a plant engineering environment. Willingness and ability to work 12-hour overnight shifts on a rotating schedule. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience as a utility operator, maintenance technician, or in plant engineering is highly beneficial. Experience supporting vertical and horizontal packaging equipment in a production setting. Knowledge of plumbing systems within an industrial or large commercial facility. Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in a production or food-related environment. Comfort working in a fast-paced manufacturing setting with changing priorities. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Attention to detail in documentation, safety compliance, and equipment adjustments. Why Work Here?
