Job Description

at Department of Transportation in Springfield, Illinois, United States Job Description Essential Functions Plans, organizes, and supervises the activities of the district Geotechnical Unit. Provides timely, practical, and economical solutions to geotechnical problems encountered during the design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and structures. Prepares, reviews, and approves geotechnical reports for structure and roadway improvements. Reviews plans and develops specifications, special provisions, and details regarding geotechnical construction. Develops the scope of work and supervises professional contracts awarded to consulting firms for geotechnical work. Provides geotechnical expertise to local highway agencies and other government agencies. Ensures that geotechnical construction is performed according to applicable plans, special provisions, and standard specifications. Assigns, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff. Ensures staff compliance with applicable safety regulations, practices, and procedures. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois. Five years of experience in civil engineering. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of geotechnical products, subsurface investigation methods, and soil testing procedures. Previous coursework in geotechnical engineering. Previous work experience in geotechnical engineering. Strong oral and/or written communication skills. Strong judgment and analytical aptitude.
