Job Title:
Civil Engineer EIT Job Description This role focuses on performing field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. You will support construction projects by ensuring that materials meet specified standards, accurately documenting test results, and communicating findings to project stakeholders. This position offers a mix of field, office, and laboratory work within a collaborative civil engineering environment. Responsibilities Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. Conduct laboratory testing of construction materials to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards. Communicate clearly and professionally with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other stakeholders regarding site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection procedures and results. Transport material samples from job sites to the laboratory, ensuring all samples are properly labeled and accompanied by accurate identifying documentation. Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in the form of written and digital reports, providing timely daily updates to the project manager. Maintain, clean, and organize testing equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure they remain in safe and reliable working condition. Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites as needed to support project workload and timelines. Adhere to strict safety standards at all times while working in the field, office, and laboratory environments. Perform concrete testing and inspection, including tasks such as sampling, slump testing, air content, and cylinder fabrication as required. Conduct soil testing and nuclear density gauge testing in the field to verify compaction and material properties. Carry out aggregate and asphalt testing to confirm material quality and compliance with project requirements. Document all test methods, procedures, and outcomes accurately to support quality control and quality assurance efforts. Essential Skills 1-2+ years of experience testing concrete, soil, and/or asphalt. Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam passed or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required. Experience with concrete testing and concrete inspection. Experience with soil testing and aggregate testing. Experience with asphalt testing. Experience using nuclear density gauges or nuclear gauges (includingNUKE GAUGE
) for field compaction testing. Background in civil engineering or a related degree required. Ability to work comfortably and safely outdoors in varying weather conditions. Clean driving record and ability to safely operate company vehicles. Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to materials testing and construction. Ability to prepare clear written and digital reports documenting test procedures and results. Strong attention to detail and commitment to following established testing and safety procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Civil engineering education or related technical degree supporting materials testing and inspection. Familiarity with ACI practices and standards for concrete testing. Experience working in small field teams and coordinating tasks with other technicians. Ability to effectively communicate with project managers, contractors, and clients in a professional manner. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple samples, tests, and reports simultaneously. Proactive, "can do" attitude with a willingness to assist with additional tasks when work is slow. Comfort with both field and office work, including time spent in a materials testing laboratory. Basic proficiency with computers and digital reporting tools for data entry and documentation. Work Environment This position involves approximately 75% field work and 25% office and laboratory work. Testing is primarily conducted at job sites, where you will perform on-site materials testing and observation, followed by documentation and reporting in the office. Some laboratory testing is completed in a dedicated materials lab located in Lenexa. You will work within a medium-sized civil engineering firm as part of a small materials group, typically in teams of 1-3 people depending on project requirements. The culture emphasizes a strong "can do" attitude, where team members stay engaged and find productive tasks even when project work slows. The field environment requires working outdoors in various weather conditions and traveling to different construction sites. The office and lab environments are structured and equipment-focused, supporting detailed testing and reporting activities. The dress code in the field typically includes boots and jeans, along with company-provided attire as appropriate for safety and identification. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lenexa, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
