Project Engineer (Hands‑On Design + Plant Projects)

Pay:
$50 - $60/hr + We are seeking an experienced, hands‑on Project Engineer to support capital and process improvement projects at a manufacturing facility in Springfield, MO. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys full ownership of projects from concept through installation and closeout, rather than simply managing timelines or vendors. This is a highly visible, on‑site role within a small engineering organization where you'll work closely with operations, contractors, and site leadership to execute meaningful facility improvements. What You'll Be Working On The facility manufactures dry and liquid ingredient systems used by large consumer product manufacturers.
Equipment and processes include:
+ Large processing and packaging equipment + Spray drying systems + Material handling, piping, and utility systems + Post‑processing and coating operations + Projects are typically $200K+ in value and focused on improving safety, reliability, compliance, and operational efficiency. Key Responsibilities You will independently manage multiple projects at once, including: + Scoping and defining capital and process improvement projects + Developing project plans, requirements, and schedules + Creating engineering documentation, drawings, and specifications + Performing hands‑on mechanical design work using SolidWorks + Issuing work to contractors and managing purchase orders + Overseeing on‑site construction, installation, and integration + Being present on the production floor during active project work + Managing project closeout, verification, documentation, and handoff Example Project A recent project included a spray dryer fire suppression system upgrade, involving: + Evaluating system design and pumping requirements + Integrating control valves and safety components + Designing sanitary piping to protect product integrity + Coordinating contractors and internal teams through installation Required Qualifications + Strong experience in plant, facilities, or manufacturing engineering + Proven ability to run projects independently from start to finish + Hands‑on design experience (not just oversight or coordination) + Solid experience managing contractors and on‑site work + Comfortable working in a structured organization with formal approvals Preferred Experience (Nice to Have) + Food, consumer goods, chemical, or industrial manufacturing experience + Mechanical engineering focus + SolidWorks proficiency Soft Skills That Matter + Highly organized and detail‑oriented + Patient and effective in a lower‑urgency, stability‑focused environment + Clear communicator who thinks projects through end‑to‑end + Dependable, accountable, and self‑directed + Engaged and hands‑on — someone who shows up and owns their work + Why This Role Is Attractive + High level of ownership and autonomy + Minimal bureaucracy and organizational layers + Direct exposure to decision‑makers + Opportunity to make real, visible improvements to the facility + Competitive hourly rate for a hands‑on engineering role Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Springfield, MO.
