Job Title:
Civil Engineer Job Description This mid-level Civil Engineer role focuses on land development projects in the commercial and private sectors, including single-lot developments, existing subdivision work, and pond retrofit projects. You will contribute to stormwater management, grading, roadway corridor design, and water and sewer infrastructure, using AutoCAD and Civil 3D as your primary design tools. The position offers strong growth potential, exposure to a variety of civil site projects, and the opportunity to work in collaborative project teams within a long-established and stable engineering firm in the DMV area. Responsibilities Design and support land development projects for commercial and private sector clients, including single-lot development and existing subdivision projects. Perform stormwater management design for roadway corridors, incorporating Environmentally Sensitive Design principles. Develop and review civil site plans, including roads, grading, water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure. Lead specific engineering tasks related to pond retrofits, including design and modification of pond outflow and control structures. Modify and design riser pipes, valves, weirs, pipes, and other appurtenances, including changes to size and elevation of weirs, openings, valves, and orifices. Conduct culvert analysis and design to support roadway and site development projects. Contribute to stream restoration and hydraulic modeling efforts as part of water resources and stormwater projects. Prepare and coordinate sediment control and erosion control plans that comply with applicable regulations. Use AutoCAD (LDD preferred) and Civil 3D to produce accurate, detailed engineering drawings and construction documents. Collaborate in project teams to deliver high-quality, on-time project deliverables for multiple concurrent assignments. Work independently, think critically, and solve engineering problems with minimal supervision while seeking guidance when needed. Coordinate with internal stakeholders and project team members to ensure design consistency and adherence to established processes. Essential Skills At least 4 years of experience in land development, stormwater management, sediment control, and grading. At least 3 years of hands-on design experience using Civil 3D. Proficiency with AutoCAD, including experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D; AutoCAD LDD experience is preferred as it is the primary CADD platform in use. Strong background in stormwater management design, including roadway corridor projects with Environmentally Sensitive Design. Experience with sediment and erosion control design and documentation. Experience with water and sewer design for civil site projects. Demonstrated ability to perform culvert analysis and design. Experience with stream restoration and hydraulic modeling in a water resources or civil engineering context. Ability to design and modify pond outflow and control structures, including riser pipes, valves, weirs, and related components. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering (preferred but not required). Ability to work independently and think on your feet, using sound engineering judgment. Experience in private sector land development projects; public sector experience will also be considered. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with land development projects in Montgomery County and Prince George's County is a significant plus. Private sector project experience is strongly preferred, with flexibility to consider candidates with public sector backgrounds. Familiarity with single-lot development and existing subdivision projects. background in water resources or water resource engineering. Strong attention to detail in preparing civil site plans and construction documents. Interest in professional development and obtaining additional certifications; the company will reimburse for certifications such as PMP, CMP, and others. Ability to thrive in a project team environment and collaborate effectively with engineers at different experience levels. Willingness to learn and adopt established internal engineering and design processes. Work Environment The role is based in the Silver Spring, MD headquarters, which has around 50 employees and operates as part of a stable, full-service civil engineering firm that has been established in the DMV region for over 50 years. The company structures work around project teams rather than traditional departmental silos, providing broad exposure to different project phases and disciplines. The primary design tools include AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and related CADD platforms, with AutoCAD LDD serving as a key system. The organization emphasizes mentoring and has a strong goal of hiring and developing less experienced engineers by teaching them established internal processes. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Silver Spring, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.05 - $45.67/hr.
