Occasional travel to Del Valle, TX required About the Role The Materials Specialist ensures the right materials are identified, documented, and available before production needs them. At Dovetail, every project has a unique material story — custom species, specified hardware, long-lead specialty items, sourced-to-spec sheet goods, and metal components. You are the one who tells that story accurately and early. Working from engineered drawing sets and project documentation, you will perform material take-offs, identify long-lead items, propose value engineering alternatives, and build the complete material package that purchasing and production depend on. You will work directly with drafting, project management, and the purchasing team to eliminate material risk before it becomes a production problem. Key Responsibilities Perform complete material take-offs from engineered shop drawing sets, identifying sheet goods, hardware, specialty items, and long-lead materials for each project area. Identify long-lead materials early in the project lifecycle and communicate lead time requirements to the purchasing team in time to protect the production schedule. Verify material specifications, quantities, and availability against contract scope, specifications, and architectural documents. Flag cost risks, specification discrepancies, and substitution needs to the project manager and purchasing team before they reach production. Identify value engineering opportunities and propose material alternatives that maintain design intent while improving cost or lead time — with documentation for project manager review. Maintain and update the project Bill of Materials through the full submittal cycle, including Approved-as-Noted revisions and resubmittals. Coordinate with the purchasing team on material naming, Innergy material records, and vendor sourcing to ensure accurate procurement. Maintain accurate MTO records within Innergy and support compliance with workflow step checklists. Qualifications Requirements Experience in architectural millwork, casework, metal fabrication, or a related custom fabrication environment — must be able to read shop drawings and understand the materials they require. Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, ID drawings, specifications, and submittal sets. Working knowledge of wood species, sheet goods, hardware, laminates, veneers, common millwork materials, and general metal materials used in architectural fabrication. Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation discipline — errors in an MTO become errors on the shop floor. Organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously. Preferred Experience with Innergy ERP or similar production management software. Familiarity with AWI standards and millwork construction methods. AutoCAD experience — ability to read and navigate drawing sets directly. Experience with Bluebeam for drawing markup and review. Exposure to purchasing, procurement, or vendor coordination workflows. Success Characteristics The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Strong work ethic, ownership, and personal accountability High integrity in decision-making and communication A proactive, solution-oriented mindset Attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement Positive attitude and team-first mentality Clear, respectful, and effective communication skills
