Structural Bridge Engineer | Richmond, Virginia | Virginia Beach, VA | Wiliamsburg, VA | Hybrid VHB's Structural Engineering group plays a critical role in enhancing connectivity through infrastructure projects, including complex bridge and interchange designs, rehabilitation and inspections, pedestrian walkways, and transit stations. This diverse range of services contributes to improved mobility for the traveling public. VHB is expanding its Virginia region along I-64 and is seeking a Structural Engineer specializing in bridge design in our Richmond, Williamsburg or Virginia Beach location. In this position, you will serve in a technical role focused on the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of bridge and other transportation-related structural projects. Bridges & Structures | VHB Responsibilities Review plans, specifications, reports, and analyses to ensure they meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements
Support and implement structural planning, analysis, and the preparation of both preliminary and final design documents for bridge-focused projects
Develop design plans, technical specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, and more
Ensure production of plans, specifications, reports, and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality standards
Review and create structural inspections/evaluations, as well as associated load capacity ratings
Assist other engineers with a variety of assignments, such as the design and detailing of structures that support or resist loads (e.g., highway, pedestrian, and railroad bridges; commuter rail stations; marine structures; energy projects; retaining walls)
Perform project scoping studies and alternatives analysis
Prepare construction contract documents and technical reports Skills & Knowledge Extensive knowledge of structural engineering concepts, practices, and procedures
Proven excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing
Collaborative team player with a strong ability to work independently
Strong technical and critical thinking skills
Highly detail-oriented with a focus on quality
Proficiency with structural engineering software (AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, Mathcad)
Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenBridge, MicroStation v8 and Connect is a strong plus
Familiarity with engineering standards and procedures, including AASHTO and DOT guidelines
Experience in bridge design and detailing (steel, concrete, prestressed concrete), as well as seismic analysis Minimum Qualifications:
3+ years of structural bridge design experience required
B.S. in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred)
