Job Title:
Sr Project Engineer Job Description The Sr Project Engineer provides comprehensive project controls support across planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, and change management for multiple programs and projects. This role develops, maintains, and updates project schedules and budgets, prepares financial analyses, and supports project leadership with accurate, timely information to guide decision-making. The Sr Project Engineer helps identify and track project risks, develops mitigation strategies, and creates clear status reports and performance dashboards to monitor progress and performance. Responsibilities Provide project controls support to program and project leadership in the areas of planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, and change management across a variety of programs and projects. Assist in the development and maintenance of detailed project schedules, ensuring accurate timelines, resource allocation, and alignment with the project plan developed by project leadership. Collect progress and performance updates from project teams and update schedules to reflect actual progress, changes, and trends. Track and monitor project budgets, expenses, and financial forecasts for assigned programs and projects. Prepare cost reports and financial analyses to support decision-making and ensure alignment with project objectives. Help identify project risks, support the development of mitigation strategies, and maintain risk registers with timely and accurate updates. Create and distribute project status reports and performance dashboards to program and project leadership, clearly communicating progress, issues, and key metrics. Support the development and maintenance of project metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track progress and performance against plan. Execute the core tasks and responsibilities of the role with minimal supervision, ensuring high-quality and timely deliverables. Review and interpret engineering documents and derive quantities from them to support estimating and planning activities. Perform detailed quantity surveys using on-screen takeoff tools, depending on the assigned project. Use project management software applications to support planning, scheduling, cost control, and reporting activities. Develop and write basis of estimate documents to clearly explain underlying assumptions, methodologies, and calculations. Apply industry-recognized best practices in at least one of the following areas: planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, or change management and trends. Maintain a professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication with internal and external stakeholders. Perform other duties as assigned by leadership to support successful project delivery. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in engineering. Typically 7 or more years of experience in engineering, project management, or a related industry. Experience utilizing industry-known best practices in at least one of the following areas: planning and scheduling, cost management, estimating, or change management and trends. Experience using project management software applications for scheduling, cost control, and reporting. Basic understanding of engineering documents and the ability to derive quantities from them. Basic software application skills, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Advanced software skills using on-screen takeoff and estimating tools. Experience writing basis of estimate documents. Knowledge of several construction and project disciplines. Ability to execute core tasks and responsibilities with minimal supervision. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience supporting multiple programs and projects simultaneously in a project controls capacity. Familiarity with risk registers and risk mitigation planning. Experience developing project metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Ability to prepare clear, concise status reports and performance dashboards for leadership. Comfort working with financial data, including budgets, forecasts, and cost reports. Broad understanding of construction and project execution processes across multiple disciplines. Work Environment The role operates in an on-site office environment. You work closely with project teams and leadership, using project management software applications, Microsoft Word and Excel, and on-screen takeoff and estimating tools as part of your daily responsibilities. The position involves regular interaction with stakeholders through professional written and verbal communication, and requires consistent presence in the office to collaborate, review documents, and support project execution. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Oak Ridge, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $80.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
