Job Description
Jacobs Cities & Places is seeking a talented Structural Engineer based out of Bellevue or Seattle, WA, to support the design and delivery of low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise building projects across the Pacific Northwest and Inland Northwest. We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, a clear interest in mass timber and hybrid structural systems, and a desire to contribute to high-performing, design-forward projects in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This role is ideal for a motivated engineer who wants to grow in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and help shape buildings that are technically rigorous, resilient, and meaningful to the communities they serve. Key Responsibilities Contribute to structural design for a range of building types, including residential, mixed-use, commercial, civic, education, and institutional projects Support engineering analysis and documentation for low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise structures using concrete, steel, wood-frame, mass timber, and hybrid systems Participate in the development of framing concepts, gravity and lateral systems, and building structural strategies from early design through construction Assist with structural calculations, modeling, and coordination of drawings and specifications Work closely with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and specialty consultants to deliver well-integrated building solutions Support project teams in addressing Pacific Northwest design considerations, including seismic design, lateral force-resisting systems, wind, gravity loading, and constructability Contribute to mass timber pursuits and projects by helping evaluate system selection, connection strategies, coordination requirements, prefabrication opportunities, and code considerations Participate in internal and external meetings and communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences Help advance quality, innovation, and sustainability in structural design practice What Success Looks Like in This Role Brings strong technical fundamentals and a willingness to learn quickly Understands that structural engineering is not only about calculations, but about enabling architecture, performance, and buildability Can speak the language of mass timber with confidence and curiosity Contributes thoughtfully to resilient, code-compliant, and elegant structural solutions Works well with architects and integrated design teams, not in isolation Brings energy, accountability, and a solutions-oriented mindset to project delivery Why Join Jacobs Cities & Places Work on meaningful projects that shape communities across the region Be part of an integrated team that values design, technical rigor, and innovation Grow your expertise in mass timber, sustainable design, and high-performance buildings Collaborate with architects, planners, engineers, and project leaders across a broad range of market sectors Build your career in a practice that values both design ambition and delivery excellence LI-AC2 Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a structural emphasis 10 to 15 years of relevant structural engineering experience in building design Engineer-in-Training certification, or ability to obtain quickly Familiarity with structural design in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, including applicable building codes and regional seismic requirements Experience contributing to building projects across multiple scales, including low-rise, mid-rise, and ideally high-rise structures Working knowledge of concrete, steel, wood-frame, and lateral system design Demonstrated interest in mass timber, CLT, glulam, DLT, or hybrid timber systems Familiarity with structural analysis and design software commonly used in building practice Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams Ideally, you'll also have: Master's degree in Structural Engineering Professional Engineer license preferred, or clear path toward licensure Project experience in the Pacific Northwest or similar seismic regions Exposure to Types I, II, III, Type IV, tall wood construction Understanding of embodied carbon considerations, material efficiency, and sustainable structural design Familiarity with coordination challenges and opportunities related to prefabrication and modular construction Interest in contributing to technical excellence, thought leadership, and client-facing pursuits Jacobs is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
