The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a s tudent assistant, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of a licensed Senior Transportation Engineer. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in transportation engineering. The student assistant, in a learning capacity will assist with file management, inventory tracking, preparing meeting minutes, and preparing contract documents. The student assistant, in a learning capacity, will also assist in preparing preliminary engineering plans, maps, cross-sections, and cost estimates using software like AutoCAD or MicroStation. The student assistant will also participate in field investigations, inspections for roadway appurtenances, ADA facility upgrades, and drainage rehabilitation or repair. This role is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical engineering techniques. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, PowerPoint etc.), Computer Aided Design software such as MicroStation or AutoCAD. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in design of roadway alignments, profile grades, geometrics and drainage facilities, construction details, construction staging and utilities including performing necessary engineering calculations. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in basic engineering drafting, computations, database as-built retrieval, database as-built entry and generate or check project item quantities and plan sheets. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in reproducing and distributing project-related documents such as memorandums, plans and reports; update and maintain project files. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in the preparation of meeting materials for project development team meetings and focus meetings, attend meetings, take meeting notes, and assist in completing action items. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in preliminary field investigations, including researching, and retrieving project background data like as-builts. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
