Job Description:
Position Summary:
The Electrical Designer is responsible for the development, coordination, and documentation of electrical power, lighting, and low-voltage systems for commercial, industrial, and special projects. This role supports engineering teams by producing calculations, designs, models, drawings, studies, specifications, and construction documentation while working under varying levels of Engineering/Design Lead (ENG/DL) oversight depending on project complexity. The Electrical Designer applies industry standards, client requirements, and applicable codes to develop accurate and constructible electrical designs while coordinating with internal disciplines, project managers, and clients.
Responsibilities:
Perform electrical design calculations including branch circuit conductor, raceway, and overcurrent protection sizing. Motor branch circuit calculations including VFDs, control systems, and mechanical equipment connections. Transformer sizing and associated primary/secondary feeder calculations. Panelboard, feeder, and main breaker sizing. Voltage drops calculations to the nearest separately derived source. Short-circuit and coordination-related evaluations. Enter and maintain electrical circuit data within: Circuit assignment documents. Electrical load calculations. Short-circuit, coordination, and voltage-drop (SCVD) studies. Evaluate conductor sizing options and recommend voltage-drop mitigation solutions. Identify and report discrepancies between available fault current values and equipment ratings. Assist engineering staff with electrical studies and analysis. Develop electrical design packages from concept through construction documentation. Create and maintain one-line diagrams, panel schedules, electrical equipment schedules, power distribution layouts, lighting and equipment plans, raceway and conduit routing plans, core drilling and installation drawings. Develop electrical BIM and 3D models. Produce space photometric models and lighting calculations. Assess project spaces to determine photometric requirements. Specify lighting fixtures and associated controls. Develop electrical system architecture and distribution schemes. Produce detailed construction drawings including floor plans, equipment layouts, elevations, installation details, termination details, standard and custom details. Create project specifications and technical documentation. Develop and maintain project-specific drawing standards and templates. Create and update panel schedules and equipment databases. Generate master and long-lead equipment lists. Coordinate with engineers, designers, project managers, and other disciplines. Participate in design reviews and quality-control checks. Perform point-to-point reviews of electrical systems and documentation. Review breaker types, ratings, specifications, and equipment placement. Evaluate SCVD reports and communicate findings to engineering leadership. Assist with Requests for Information (RFIs), submittal reviews, and construction support activities. Produce and maintain accurate as-built documentation. Participate in site visits, field investigations, and design verification activities. Assist engineering staff during field walks and site assessments. Verify installation compliance with design intent and project requirements. Document field conditions and report findings to project leadership. Support commissioning and startup activities as required. Present project designs and technical solutions to clients appropriate to project size and complexity. Participate in project meetings and coordination sessions. Support project execution by identifying scope concerns, design conflicts, and constructability issues. Escalate technical concerns and out-of-scope requests to Engineering/Design Leads and Project Managers.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field preferred. Experience in electrical design for commercial, industrial, and semiconductor. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM. Strong technical and analytical skills. Ability to perform electrical calculations accurately. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Attention to detail and commitment to quality. Ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple projects. Strong coordination and teamwork abilities. Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Progressive responsibility in design, drafting, modeling, and project coordination preferred.
