Position Summary The MSE Design Manager leads and oversees the daily operations of the MSE Engineering group, including engineers, CAD operators, and co-op students, to ensure the successful planning, coordination, and execution of GIS-related projects. Provides technical guidance, resource management, quality oversight, and team leadership to support project delivery, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Ensure that the GIS Engineering Group ("Group") meets or exceeds metrics established by the GIS Director. Maintain Group budget and ensure it is not exceeded. Hire and dismiss Group personnel as approved by the GIS Director. Ensure that all work performed by Group is in accordance with
EKHO/GIS
policies, standards of engineering practice, and project-specific requirements; consult with the Chief Engineer when needed. Instill a sense of accomplishment, purpose, and direction for Group personnel. Encourage existing and new Group members to focus on quality when performing duties. Delegate work load to Group members based on experience and current demands. Develop career paths and ensure Group members are aware of their role, both current and future. Promote and facilitate training for Group members, including CAD Operators. Establish peer review procedures; update existing design guidelines and manuals. Track projects using Microsoft Project or equivalent software; work with the Operations Manager to ensure projects remain on schedule. Participate in providing technical consultation to external clients regarding product information and use of core software. Assist the Group with project workload when needed; intermittently peer review work of Group to gauge quality as well as provide feedback on Group's performance.
Education/Qualifications:
  • BS-Civil Engineering degree required, MS-Civil Engineering degree preferred. PE registration required and ability to be registered in multiple US states.
  • Minimum of five years of geotechnical design experience or adequate design experience as deemed acceptable by the GIS Director.
Expert understanding of the principles of soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering, especially concerning the strength properties of geotechnical materials, earth pressure theories, and slope stability. Expert in the design of MSE structures. Highly experienced in reading and interpreting project plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports. Thorough knowledge of engineering terminology. Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite as well as Autodesk software.
