Role Description The Head Mechanic for the Community Bicycle Shop leads the day-to-day operations of the workshop, ensuring safe, high-quality repairs and refurbishments of bicycles for community use. This full-time, on-site role in the San Francisco Bay Area includes diagnosing mechanical issues, performing and overseeing maintenance and repair work, and implementing preventive maintenance standards for all bicycles and related equipment. The Head Mechanic trains, mentors, and supports volunteers of varying skill levels, providing clear instruction on tools, safety, and repair techniques. Responsibilities also include organizing the shop space, managing inventory of parts and tools, coordinating repair priorities, and maintaining accurate records of work completed. The role collaborates with leadership to support events, donation days, and community programs that expand access to reliable bicycles. Qualifications Strong hands-on skills in Maintenance, Maintenance & Repair, and Preventive Maintenance for bicycles and related equipment. Experience with Troubleshooting mechanical issues, including diagnosing and resolving complex problems efficiently. Familiarity with Heavy Equipment or shop equipment (e.g., repair stands, truing stands, specialized tools) and safe operating practices. Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and mentor volunteers or team members in a workshop or community setting. Excellent organizational skills, including shop organization, inventory management, and documentation of repairs and maintenance. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds and skill levels. Prior experience as a lead mechanic, bike shop manager, or equivalent role; industry certifications (e.g., bicycle mechanic training) are a plus. Commitment to the mission of increasing access to bicycles and supporting a culture of cycling in the community.
