Fleet Service Technician II - $32.00 - $37.00 Per Hour
SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE
The Fleet Service Technician II performs advanced-level diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of LIFEwest Ambulance fleet vehicles and equipment. This position operates with a high degree of independence and is responsible for troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems. The Fleet Technician II plays a critical role in ensuring fleet reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining operational readiness for emergency and non-emergency medical transport services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This classification outlines primary duties and is not all-inclusive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on operational needs. Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered fleet vehicles, including Mercedes, Ford and General Motors (GM) ambulances and vehicles Independently identify mechanical, electrical, and system failures and determine appropriate repair solutions with minimal oversight Diagnose and repair complex electrical systems, charging systems, and onboard ambulance power systems Service, diagnose, and repair HVAC systems in vehicles, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and climate control systems Perform preventative maintenance and major repairs including engines, transmissions, drivetrains, suspension, and braking systems Lead and complete work orders from start to finish, ensuring accuracy, quality, and proper documentation in fleet management systems Conduct comprehensive safety and compliance inspections to ensure all vehicles meet regulatory and company standards Perform field response repairs and troubleshooting for out-of-service units, including on-scene or roadside diagnostics Assist with installation, modification, and troubleshooting of ambulance-specific equipment (lighting systems, sirens, radios, inverters, gurney systems, oxygen systems) Provide guidance and technical support to Fleet Technician I staff as needed Coordinate with Operations and Dispatch to prioritize repairs based on operational demand and unit availability Order and manage parts inventory; verify parts, track usage, and ensure timely repairs Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and work environment in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards Test drive and validate repairs to ensure proper function and safety Maintain detailed records of diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and parts usage Identify recurring mechanical issues and recommend long-term solutions to improve fleet reliability Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and fleet planning efforts
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED required Completion of an accredited automotive or diesel repair program preferred Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle maintenance and repair Demonstrated experience in advanced diagnostics and electrical system troubleshooting required Experience working on emergency vehicles or ambulance systems strongly preferred Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of:
Advanced automotive and diesel diagnostic techniques HVAC systems diagnosis and repair for vehicle applications Complex electrical systems, wiring schematics, and electronic control modules Preventative maintenance programs and fleet lifecycle management Shop safety procedures and OSHA regulations Fleet maintenance software and computerized diagnostic tools Skill in: Independently diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical and electrical issues Performing HVAC system repairs and recharging systems to manufacturer specifications Using advanced diagnostic tools, scanners, and testing equipment Reading and interpreting schematics, manuals, and technical documentation Managing workload and prioritizing tasks with minimal supervision Communicating technical information clearly to non-technical staff Mentoring and supporting entry-level technicians Maintaining accurate and detailed repair documentation
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS
Valid California Driver's License (required) Minimum of two (2) ASE certifications (or ability to obtain within 12 months) EVOC certification preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform essential job functions: Ability to perform sustained physical labor including standing, bending, lifting, and working in confined or awkward spaces Ability to lift and maneuver equipment up to 100 pounds with appropriate assistance Work performed in both shop and field environments with exposure to: Extreme weather conditions Noise, fumes, and hazardous materials Mechanical and electrical hazards Ability to communicate effectively in person, via radio, and by phone
ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS
Operate with a high level of independence and accountability Support 24/7 fleet operations, including on-call or after-hours response as needed Serve as a technical resource for fleet-related issues within the organization Uphold LIFEwest standards for safety, professionalism, and operational readiness
