Job Description

Position Summary RK Electric is seeking a skilled Data Technician - Fiber Specialist to join our growing low-voltage and communications team. This position is responsible for the installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic and structured cabling systems in commercial, industrial, and mission-critical environments. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure, industry standards, and structured cabling systems while maintaining a commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and customer satisfaction. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Fiber Optic Installation & Testing
  • Install, route, secure, and support fiber optic cabling systems, including aerial, underground, innerduct, and conduit applications.
  • Perform fiber optic terminations utilizing fusion splicing and mechanical termination methods.
  • Install and terminate fiber optic enclosures, patch panels, splice trays, and distribution frames.
  • Conduct fiber optic testing utilizing OTDR, power meter, light source, and fiber certification equipment.
  • Analyze test results and identify faults, attenuation issues, and system deficiencies.
  • Perform fiber optic troubleshooting, repairs, and emergency service work as required.
  • Label and document fiber installations in accordance with project specifications and company standards. Structured Cabling Systems
  • Install and terminate Category 5e, Category 6, Category 6A, and other low-voltage communication cabling systems.
  • Install cable pathways including conduit, cable tray, J-hooks, ladder rack, and support systems.
  • Install telecommunications rooms, equipment racks, cabinets, and cable management systems.
  • Terminate and test copper communication systems utilizing industry-standard certification equipment.
  • Assist with network equipment installations and cross-connects as required. Project Execution
  • Read and interpret blueprints, telecommunications drawings, riser diagrams, specifications, and project schedules.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of completed work, testing results, and project changes.
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and customers to ensure successful project completion.
  • Identify potential issues and communicate solutions proactively.
  • Maintain productivity while meeting project deadlines and quality expectations. Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all company safety policies, customer requirements, and applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
  • Properly use and maintain company vehicles, tools, testing equipment, and personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in required safety meetings and training programs.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with applicable codes, industry standards, and manufacturer specifications. Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience installing and testing fiber optic cabling systems.
  • Experience with fusion splicing and fiber optic testing equipment.
  • Experience installing structured cabling systems in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and telecommunications plans.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements. Preferred
  • BICSI Technician, Installer, or equivalent certification.
  • FOA (Fiber Optic Association) certification.
  • Manufacturer certifications (Corning, CommScope, Panduit, Leviton, etc.).
  • Data center experience.
  • Experience with DAS, wireless infrastructure, access control, or security systems. Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on ladders, lifts, rooftops, and construction sites.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to distinguish cable color codes.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing.
  • OTDR and fiber certification testing.
  • Structured cabling installation and certification.
  • Telecommunications room buildouts.
  • Blueprint and specification interpretation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Pay:
$35.00 - $40.00 per hour
