Position Overview AKIVA is hiring Medical Instrument Technicians to operate and maintain the specialized diagnostic and therapeutic instrumentation that supports radiology, cardiology, and allied procedural services for the Veterans served by the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. This labor category aligns with the VA ICSP Medical Instrument Technician / Perfusionist definition (OPM series GS-0649). Typical assignments include cardiac catheterization lab support, diagnostic and vascular ultrasound, echocardiography, electroneurodiagnostics (EEG/EMG), and related imaging-adjacent procedural instrumentation. Technicians are matched to assignments based on specialty credentials and active task-order demand. Key Responsibilities Operate, calibrate, and maintain specialized medical instrumentation used in diagnostic imaging, therapeutic treatment, organ monitoring, and surgical or procedural support Prepare patients and equipment for procedures, verify identity using two identifiers, explain the procedure, and obtain informed consent as applicable Assist physicians and licensed providers during procedures by setting up sterile fields, managing contrast or therapeutic agents as authorized, and documenting procedural data Monitor patients during procedures for hemodynamic, respiratory, or neurologic changes and escalate clinical concerns to the supervising provider and nursing team Record measurements, tracings, and procedural observations accurately in CPRS, RIS, and specialty information systems (e.g., cath lab hemodynamic, echo, EEG, or perfusion records) Perform daily and periodic quality control on all assigned instrumentation; complete preventive maintenance checks and report defects through Biomedical Engineering Maintain supplies, sterile processing workflows, and par levels for the assigned suite or lab Comply with infection prevention, radiation safety (where applicable), HIPAA, the VA Privacy Act, VA record retention, and Talent Management System (TMS) training requirements Participate in accreditation readiness (Joint Commission, ACR/IAC as applicable), peer review, and continuous quality improvement Deliver patient-centered, Veteran-focused care with cultural humility and sensitivity to service-connected conditions Required Qualifications Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the specialization of the position, OR completion of coursework including at least 24 semester hours with at least 12 in a field directly related to the specialization (consistent with theVA ICSP GS-0649
qualification standard and 42 CFR Part 75) Active specialty certification appropriate to the assignment (for exampleRCIS/RCES
for cath lab;ARDMS/RDCS/RVT
for echo/vascular ultrasound;R. EEG T./R. EP T.
for electroneurodiagnostics; CCP for perfusion) Active California licensure or permit as required by the specialty (e.g., CA CRT for fluoroscopic cath lab support, if applicable) Minimum of one (1) year of hospital clinical experience in the assigned specialty Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); ACLS required for cardiac catheterization, perfusion, and other invasive-procedure assignments Demonstrated proficiency with CPRS and specialty information systems relevant to the assignment Ability to obtain and maintain VA credentialing through VetPro and a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential Ability to pass a federal background investigation (minimum Tier 1 / NACI) and meet all VA immunization, TB screening, and occupational health requirements Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and a patient-centered orientation Must be authorized to work in the United States Preferred Qualifications Prior experience at a VA Medical Center, DoD Military Treatment Facility, or Indian Health Service facility Dual specialty credentialing (e.g., RCIS + RCES;RDCS + RVT
) Experience with interventional radiology or cardiac cath lab hemodynamic and angiographic systems Experience with CPRS, VistA Imaging, Cerner Millennium, or specialty cath lab / echo information systems (Mac-Lab, Witt, Xcelera, Syngo Dynamics) Bilingual ability in Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, or Korean Veteran status (AKIVA applies a Veteran hiring preference consistent with federal law) Two or more years of hospital clinical experience in the assigned specialtyTools, Technologies & Frameworks Specialties:
